You need at least Office 2008 SP1 (12.1.0) on your Mac.
Is your version up to date enough to qualify for this update?

You also need to make sure you are running an official release, not the
EWS beta for instance,

I have the same error message when trying to install SP1. I too have a legal offical release copy. See msg below:

You cannot install Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume.

Any other suggestions?

I placed office 2008 in the trash and reinstalled from the disc downloaded sp1 then 2 and all is working.

I previously had a legal copy of office and SP1 and other update no idea why the install of SP2 is failing

So after all that work you finally got it running. At this point do you really trust the update? Consider all the problems others have had with it.

I'm not going to touch 12.2.0 until Microsoft announces that if has done a thorough review of this update and assures us all that it is bug-free.

I have Version 12.1.0 (080409). I am using the installer for 12.2.0 provided by MS AutoUpdate and receive the same message.

I have been using 12.1.0, but had significant problems with it. Office was deleted by dragging the MS Office folder from Apps, placing it in the trash and emptying trash.

I reinstalled 2008 from the disc and successfully updated it to 12.1.0 without problems except for the weird "Office doesn't understand" pop-up. (I have an Intel Duo running OS 10.5.7)

The 12.2.0 update isn't happening.

I went to install the update (I was at 12.1.5 and all was fine). When it got most of the way through, it said "install error" and basically gave me no other information. Word now says it's at 12.2.0, and now... my up and down arrows and page up and page down work backward. And get this... I'm using a Microsoft ergonomic keyboard. This is so frustrating. The last release from MS wouldn't install at all. And I wasted a bunch of time running some permissions routine that this site recommended. DON"T TAKE THIS UPDATE UNTIL MS GETS IT IRONED OUT... And by ironed out, I mean QA'd.

I didn't even know monolingual existed - kinda of neat for some other apps

I haven't done anything that I'm aware of to Office is there some good way
to check?

Am I going to be forced to reinstall? Will it loose all of my settings?

Stay away from it: It's evil IMVHO.
It's a disaster bound to happen (like not being able to install the
updates, or applications becoming unstable).

Unfortunately not :-\

You won;t lose any setting (they're not uninstalled), but I fear you
will have to reinstall.
Reinstall, then apply the SP1 update (12.1.0) the the SP2 (12.2.0).

Are you sure you are using the right updater?? You didn't select the
updater for another version of Office (eg: Updater for the French
version, etc)??

I was talking about the updater.
On the MS site, you can download the updater for many different
languages.

I have this same problem and I'm on 12.1.9

Along with the usual fixes, I found the following info:

1) Leopard is not updating the Desktop Database and thus the Finder is not
showing the proper version.

You might need to restart your computer three or 4 times to get this file
updated.

2) Users that have modified their soundsets could cause Entourage not to
update

was on 12.1.9, ran all apple updates first (10.5.8) then ran 12.2 updater. reboot, applejack Auto, then 12.2.1, then rebuilt database as asked. worked perfect here on 3 machines.

I get the same error plus at 12.2 0 it says software install failed- you may
want to reinstall ( which I have done 5 times to no avail!!
Apple received an email from microsoft today that this is their issue) I
was told by microsoft that they wrote this version before snow leopard and
so it's apples fault!! boo hoo who is the lazy programmer - well it's not
usually apple- they did not write vista.

I don't care which gorilla scr..d the pooch- Just fix it already the best
fix for now is to just keep SP1 on and wait for a year or so till MS gets
around to a rewrite
