Office SP2 tries to install/configure every time I start computer

Am running XP Pro SP3 and Office 2007 Small Business. When prompted by
Windows Update, I attempted to install Office 12 SP2. PROBLEM: Whenever
machine restarts, all Office components once again try to configure &
install. I see that others have this problem; what is the solution? All
software on my machine was always rock-solid up till now.

The Windows Update history problem tells you that the update failed with
some error code. Look up the code to see its meaning and solution.
Another thing you could try is to download the stand alone installer for
Office 2007 SP2. Install that manually. Since the installation is now in
interactive mode, you may get some more clear instructions from it.

Bernard,

I've had a similar problem with my Office 10, Excel 2002, etc. After the
Windows updates installed 6/9/09, the system wants to reinstall anytime I try
to open an Office product or even IE (which I don't usually use). I've used
System Restore to go back to pre- 6/9, and all is fine. But I'm afraid to
restart because it will install the updates again.

I'm running Windows Media Center 2002, SP3.

Your issue sounds like a different issue from the OP. Your issue is probably
an installer issue. It's not that it wants to reinstall those products but
it wants to repair those products for some reason. Do not cancel the
installer but simply let it finish and see if it can repair itself
successfully. If not, uninstall those products and reinstall them again from
the original source. No settings or data will get lost because of this.

Randy,

Thanks for your reply. The problem is the Office version I'm working with
was OEM and I don't have the installation disks. It hunts for the files,
then quits. That's where it gets hung up.

It seems like the update is deleting some files it shouldn't to trigger the
reinstall.

The update doesn't do anything wrong. The issue is that the original
installation somehow already got damaged before the update installation.
Even when it is OEM, you must have been provided with some method of
restoring the original installation or applications. You could ask your OEM
for a replacement disk set but since you were talking about Office XP/2002,
I doubt that they still have those available to you.
