Outlook 2007 RPC over HTTP

S

SJMP

I cannot connect my Office 2007 clients with RPC over HTTP using the same
settings I use for Outlook 2003. IS there something different that has to be
done.

Thanks,

SJMP

Hi SJMP,

This issue may be cause by connection optimization feature in Outlook 2007. When we are using Internet Access or proxy environment
which is considered to be a less perfectly connection than Internal Access by Outlook 2007. Some optimization features, such as
default gateway check, failover DNS query to WINS, etc. may cause connection issue.

Disable optimization feature in Outlook 2007 by modify the value of DefConnectOpts key to 0. In this way, Outlook 2007 will act same as
Outlook 2003

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following subkey:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\RPC

3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
4. Type DefConnectOpts, and then press ENTER.
5. Right-click DefConnectOpts, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
7. Exit Registry Editor.
8. Restart Outlook 2007 and test the issue. What is the result?

For more information, refer to the following KB article.

Error messages when you try to connect Outlook 2007 to Exchange Server: "The action cannot be completed" or "Your Microsoft
Exchange Server is unavailable" or "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913843

In case that the above step doesn't fix the issue, did you get any error message in Outlook 2007? If so, take a screen shot of the error
and send it to me at (e-mail address removed).

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Emily I made the changes you requested. I added the RPC key since there was
none in the registry path you provided.

I got the same error's and I have emialed the screen capture to you.

Thanks,

Hi Scott,

According to the screen shot (error "outlook.ost is not an offline folder file"), the issue should be caused by the *.ost file. Maybe that
the *.ost file was corrupted. Did you do something with the file outlook.ost?

According to current situation, let's create a new Outlook profile and then configure your Exchange account in the new Outlook profile.
Thus, it will generate a new *.ost file.

1. Quit Outlook. Go to Start menu > Control Panel > Mail, click Show Profiles¡
2. Select the "Prompt for a profile to be used" check box. Click Add¡
3. Type the profile name as "new outlook profile", click Ok.
4. Follow the wizard to configure your Exchange account in the new profile.
5. Start Outlook 2007 and choose to open it in the new profile.

What is the result? If the issue persists, please check if you have a default gateway configured on the computer. Has Outlook 2007
ever worked? If so, what changed?

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Emily,

When you refer to default gateway, I understand that you are referencing the
default gateway that gives access to the exchange server, but what about the
remote users who are all on DHCP from their respective ISP's. If I actually
hardcoded the default gateway it would not give them access to the internet.

Please clarify.

Thanks,

Hi Scott,

When I say 'default gateway', I refer to the default gateway setting in your network adaptor properties. I understand that you cannot
configure a default gateway for the network settings. Also, the workaround in the KB913843 article (add DefConnectOpts key in
REGEDIT) doesn't fix the issue. Please don't hardcode the default gatewary and keep the original network settings (DHCP from the ISP).
And ignore it.

Scott, have you created a new Outlook profile for the user? If so, what is the result?

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Emily,

I had already created a new outlook profile. The OST was never used before
it was a new install. I have gotten it to work after that reg fix. But the
response time in outlook is very very slow. 7-10 seconds to open an email.
Internet connection is blazing fast. the machine itself has 90% free
resources. so the load is not local. Can you suggest any reason that the
connection repsonse time is so slow.

Hi Scott,

Nice to hear that Outlook can connect to the Exchange server afterthat reg fix. I undestand that Outlook 2007 takw a long time to
open an email.

The performance issues may be caused by one or more of the following:

Large Personal Folders files (.pst) or Offline Folder files (.ost)
Third-party add-ins
Gadgets that are installed in Windows Vista
Microsoft Office Communicator integration
Antivirus software interaction
Windows Desktop Search indexing
Many Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds

Please refer to the detail steps in the following KB article to troubleshoot the outlook 2007 performance issue.

Sorry to hijack Scott's thread.

I have a similar issue, XP Pro with Office 2007 - Outlook 2007. RPC over
http ONLY works if the machine is not in the domain - ie, login into the PC
directly (workgroup).

I have checked the user in the domain has admin rights to the laptop.

Any ideas?

Evans

Hi,

Hope I am in the right place here...

We too have a similar problem - 7 or 8 clients connect to Exchange 2003 with
Outlook 2007 (RPC or HTTPS) then the 9th user is unable to connect. Was
working fine when all clients were using Outlook 2003.

I've looked at all the troubleshooting steps - most are not applicable.
Also tried the registry change on 2 clients - no noticeable change.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Hamd

i have the same problem using outlook 2007 RPC over http with exchange 2003.
i will try to uninstall communicator .

using RPC over http internally, it work fine if i untick the fast connect
..........
but when connect to other ISP and tryin to download email or Open up Outlook
2007 it will stuck there for about 10 min. probably like Emily said..
Communicator will affect it. will try and uninstall it and post up here after
