Problem with slide master

I have edited the slide master in a presentation and I have saved the
changes. But now when I switch back to normal view, the slides are
exactly as they were before. There is no sign of the changes I made in
the slide master.

Can anyone explain how I can get the changes in the slide master to
show themselves in the slides of the presentation?

OK, I think I have an answer: editing the footer is not done directly
on the slide master but is done via a dialogue box. What a confusing
way to do things!
