product key validation problem after sp2 update

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I work at a university and we have special version with office 2008 for mac with pre installed product key.
Until now everything works great, but today, after updating to SP2
I get this message when I try to open any office application:

Office for mac has determined that your product key is not valid.

Does anyone has a solution (beside removing and installing again without sp2)?

Thanks,

Office for mac has determined that your product key is not valid.

That sounds weird (and unusual).
I would contact the Computer Support at your University to see if their
site licence has some sort of restriction that would require a new key.

I unfortunately don't have any workaround for you.

FYI, I also use a University site-licenced version of Office and I don;t
have this issue.

From the phrasing of the message, it seems clear to me that Office
detects the serialisation properly. There is simply something wrong with
the type of key you have :-\

HELP - too downloaded the update via autoupdate this morning the same as all the other updates i have downloaded - and i too get the exact same error message as detailed above. There was some helpful informatin about how to uninstall and reinstall your product code - but my problem is that although i live in the UK, I am working out in the states for a couple months, and as of this mornings update, I have effectively locked myself out of my office products....my box with serial number is a 10hour flight away so i actuallu have no way of re-entering this number...please tell me you have a workaround for this.!! I am running a macbook pro, with a standalone version of office 2008, not any special site license...the information about the uninstalling your serial codes, had me find and delete 2 files...Microsoft Office 2008 settings.plist and office PID.plist. from these files, is there anyway to get what my serial number is and i can try and re-enter it?

Just to keep you in the loop, i spoke to support at Microsoft and basically there is no way of my short circuiting the system without my serial key. So until i get home to england, there is no way for me to access my programs and the suite it technically locked. I am going to have to go and buy another version of office 08 and see if that serial number will activate the software i have installed.

expensive update. thanks MS.

I got this exact same message. Seriously Microsoft, wtf!

I am a college student and downloaded Office Mac from our school's website, I guess the cd-key had been em-bedded in the file so during the installation process I don't need a product-key and I have never know what it is.

Then after the SP2 update just now I got this error message saying my cd-key is NOT VALID!? how is that possible anyway, Microsoft can't not require us to re-enter cd-key by falsely claim it is invalid! comon, fix it please!

I have the same problem with a university installed version. After SP2 installation my product key is found invalid.

I have the same problem with a university installed version. After SP2 installation my product key is found invalid.<

My company has a network install that does not require the entry of a serial number. After installing SP 2, I got the same error on all our Macs. Here is what worked for me:

I deleted both preference files for activation and emptied Trash.

I started Word and clicked through the screens but did not enter a serial number. It gave me a reg code and then quit. When I re-started Word, it came up fine.

If you have a Master Serial number instead, delete both license files again and enter it when the screen comes up.

If, however, these licenses came from Pirate Bay or a similar site, Microsoft has disabled those licenses with SP 2 and a legit code will have to be installed.

Removing Office 2008 License Files:

If your copy of Office 2008 was installed with an invalid product key, or if you mistakenly used the same product key to install Office 2008 on more than one computer, you must remove the invalid product key and enter a valid product key to use Office 2008.
1. In the Finder, select /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist, and then on the File menu, click Move to Trash.
2. Select /Users/username/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office 2008 settings.plist, and then on the File menu, click Move to Trash.

Hi Mick, please help me with this.
When you deleted the 2 files and when u started word i assumed you got to the setup assistant screen, but I couldn't "click through" the screen without a product key, since at step 2 it requires you to input a key. Please tell us specifically how you "click through" it.
And again I don't have a product key since I downloaded the software from our school's website, and it's valid.

Thanks!

If you're sure the key is valid then go back to your school and report
the problem. You cannot get help here in a peer-to-peer forum for a
license that belongs to someone else.

Microsoft is known to block keys for many products when they discover
those keys have been pirated or spread well beyond their legal use. If
your school's license has indeed been blocked then they should be
receiving a new key. You'll have to receive the new one from them. You
can't get it here.

I have the same issue. I legally purchased a copy from my university's computer store and now I'm studying in Europe, and I don't have access to my CD because it's in the U.S. This is a real inconvenience! I'm going to have to use iWork or another competing product until this is fixed.

I found a solution last night...that is, if you Time Capsule. I restored the Microsoft Office 2008 from July 20th and it worked!! Needless to say, I will be stuck with the same old version but it works right now and that's all I care about. Not really the solution but definitely a quick fix.

Product Key Validation

* folks are using black listed keys - or
* installed with black listed keys at one time.

Some users who have installed Office 2008 for Mac 12.2 are reporting an
issue that occurs after installation. The issue causes the Office Setup
Assistant to open when they try to open an Office application. This
situation occurs when the Office Setup Assistant detects that an invalid
Product Key was used to install Office 2008.

To resolve this issue, please move the following files to the Trash:

· /Users/username/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office
2008 settings.plist

· /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist

MORE INFO ON THESE FILES:
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/verify.html>

After you complete these steps, open any Office application, and then use
the product key that is included with your original installation disk to
complete the installation. The product key is located on the back of the
Office 2008 for Mac DVD sleeve or on the back of the Install Guide.

Some people have thought they had a volume license of Office installed when
they encountered this issue. If the Setup Assistant comes up after deleting
the aforementioned files asking for you to add a product key, then you do
not have a volume license copy of Office installed on your machine.

Adding to this post....(BTW if anyone does not want to post their email
online, you can contact me off list and I will pass it along. dianeross at

the subject so it doesn't get caught by my spam filter.

From Microsoft developer:

<quote>

As is mentioned, there were a series of product keys that are now invalid
with Office 12.2. This means if at some time Office was previously installed
with one of those product keys; unless the Product Keys files were deleted
prior to the installation with valid product key, then you will hit this
problem.

Deleting the files (as mentioned in an above post) will cause the Setup
Assistant to launch and ask you for your proper key.

If you are not asked for a product key in the Setup Assistant and then you
can launch the applications, then this means you have a Volume License on
your machine. It also means that prior to having the Volume License version
on your machine, you had a non-Volume License on your machine (and the
invalid Product Key was overriding the Volume License).

If you are asked for a product key and the Setup Assistant does not advance,
then that means the Product Key you are trying to use is one of the invalid
Product Keys.

I hope this helps explain what folks are seeing, and explains why some folks
are seeing different results.

If you feel that you have valid product key that is incorrectly not
progressing in the Setup Assistant dialog box, please drop a line here with
your email address and we can talk offline.

Please keep in mind however that not having an up-to-date copy of Office can
lead to more crashes and its stability is subject to change.
