Project Server 2007 Installation On Windows Sharepoint Server v3.0

I recently purchased Project Server 2007 and installed it on our Windows
Sharepoint Services v3.0 server. The installation went very well up until
the last step - Configure server farm's shared services. When I try to
create a New Shared Services Provider it comes back and says "(Provisioning
failed: Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005
(E_ACCESSDENIED)))". Both web applications, my primary web app and the
shared services web app, are listed under the shared services provider. If I
try to edit the properties of the shared services provider I get a message
"An unhandled exception occurred in the user interface. Exception
Information: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: uriString. I've tried to
create a new shared services provider and associate my web apps to it - but I
have the same results. In the Application Event Viewer, I am getting several
errors every minute - Source: Office SharePoint Server, Category: Office
Server General, Event ID 7888, Description: A runtime exception was detected.
Details follow. Message: Access is denied (Exception from HRRESULT:
0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)). Technical Details:
System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Acess is denied (Exception from HRESULT:
0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)) at
Microsoft.SharePoint.SPGlobal.HandleUnauthorizedAccessException ...

Definately sounds like an access problem. Have you tried Signing in as a
Different User? Try the Primary user you specify when installing SharePoint.

I have tried another signon - both the new one (a generic I.D.) and my
personal account, which I used initially, are in the Administrators group on
the server. Using the generic I.D. ran into the same problem when I created
the Shared Services Provider. The initial message I get each time I try the
operation (I usually wait for 30 minutes for it to complete) is:

Failure!

Shared Services Provider creation failed

Reason: Thread was being aborted.

Check the event log for details.

Note: SSP provisioning will be retried periodically, ......

What does the event log (Event Viewer) say about this? I also had a proble
when installing SSP. In the install it asks for a account and "PreDefined" is
selected by default and it uses Network Service as the account. I had to
select the other option and specify a service account I created. That seemed
to work for me.

I am getting 10 error messages and 2 warnings every 4 minutes in the
Application event log. For all 10 of the error messages, the source is
office sharepoint server, the category is office server general, the event id
is 7888 and the description is "A runtime exception was detected. Details
follow. Message: Access is denied ..." as detailed below. For the first
warning, the Source is Windows SharePoint Services, the Category is Gatherer
and the Event ID is 2436. The Description is "The start address
<sts3://ssp47050/contentdbid=(de....> cannot be crawled. Context:
Application 'Serach index file on the search server', Catalog 'Search'.
Details: The object was not found. {0x80041201}. The second warning is the
same but the start address is different. I deleted the second SharePoint
Services Provider I created as a test with the other account I.D. and I now
get only 5 error messages and still 2 warnings as explained above.
Essentially, per the event view, it seems to be trying to provision the
service once every minute and generating an error and then once every 5
minutes I get the 2 warnings. By creating a service account do you mean
creating a local account that is part of the Administrator's group?

I would create a domain service account, that is a member of the LOCAL
administrators group. and use that in the setup.
Hope that helps.
