Proofing tools error

E

elhirsch

I get this message in MS Word 2003 using spell check:

"Cannot find proofing tools for German. If you have the proofing tools,
try installing them or re-installing them..."

Actually, I'm not creating any documents in German when this message comes
up. I'm just doing a simple spellcheck on my document and it comes up at
random.
Does anyone know why this would appear or how to make the message stop?

Thanks in advance

Some of the text in the document is formatted as German. Ctrl+A to select
the entire document, then go to Tools | Language | Set Language, select the
correct language, and clear the check box for "Automatically detect
language."

I'm surprised that formatting the entire document in a language other than
German hasn't worked, but try this.

1. Ctrl+F to open the Find dialog.

2. Click on More to expand the dialog.

3. Click Format and select Language. Choose German. (Leave the "Find what"
box empty.)

4. Check the box for "Highlight all items found."

5. Click Find All. If Word reports finding anything, scan the document to
see where it is.

I had a similar problem with a document containing rogue 'other language'
spellings. Nothing worked until I followed Cindy's advice *to the letter*.
The clue is that looking to see what the selected language is is not enough.
You have to positively select it (after CTRL-A to select all) even if it
looks correctly selected anyway.

I'm out of ideas, then, and suggest you post in
microsoft.public.word.spelling.grammar.
