In publishing layout, trying to make a post card or invitation is a real pain. Is there any way, when using a template, to get arround imputing the text over and over for each of the individual postards on the template?

That's two questions :)

Publishing layout is designed for situations where all text is in linked
text boxes. If you are not using text boxes, or they are not linked, come
out of publishing layout and work in the word-processing (Print Layout)
view.

The answer to the second one is yes: there are two ways. One is to use
cross-references, the other is to use Document fields.

Start with cross-references (see the Help...)

Cheers
