Saving a Project 2007 file as Project 2003

My Government customer only has Project 2003 and does not have the ability to
load SP3 onto his computer. My company requires us to use Project 2007.

I attempted to change the default "Save Microsoft Office Project files as:"
to "Microsoft Project 2000-2003 (*.mpp)", but it returns to "Project (*.mpp)"
when I reopen the application. How can I make the default setting stay? (I
was able to successfully perform this mod in Word and Excel for the same
customer.)

Is there any other way for me to make sure my customer's Project 2003 files
are saved as Project 2003 while using them on Project 2007? (Unlike Word and
Excel, where an *x is placed at the end of the suffix, there is no
differentiation in the file suffix between 2003 and 2007.)

MHL, I cannot help you on your main question, but I can warn you to be very
careful about what you're proposing to do. If you scan this site, you'll
find a number of posts by MSP users who have scrambled files while saving
from 2007 to 2003. It is important that you install SP1 to avoid the
problem. Failing that, you'll need to use "save as" with the 2000-2003
format each time you save--it's the only way I found to get around the
scrambling problem without SP1.

Go into MSP, Help, About Microsoft Office Project. The first line should
tell you what version you're on.

RobV,
I have Project 2007, SP1 MSO, so I should be safe.
How can I get my first question answered? or find another way to resolve my
issue?

Hi MHL,

I cannot reproduce what you report. When I change the "Save
Microsoft Office Project files as" option on the Save tab in Tools >
Options to Microsoft Project 2000-2003 Project maintains that
information. What steps did you make to change the option?

I am using Project 2007 with SP-1 and the Infrastructure Update
which was released in July. See the following link for information
on the IU and download information.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

JulieS,
Thanks for the info. It helped me determine that the "Save Microsoft Office
Project files as" option only works when I have administrator rights on my
computer. Based on the user rights I have been assigned by our IT
department, when I log in as a user, the option is not saved. So it appears
that I will have to work through my IT department to resolve this.

Thanks again for your help.

MHL

You're welcome MHL and thanks for the feedback. Thanks also for the
update that admin rights are necessary to make the change "stick".

Julie,
Just to be complete, it wasn't directly an admin rights issue. Our IT
department set my user rights with a Registry Profile entry which prohibited
the change in default setting in Project. Now that the Profile entry is
removed, I am able to make the default setting stick.

Thanks again.
