Section Page Number does not start from 1?

I've searched through the archive, and after more than 2 hours of not
finding the exact same problem I am facing right now (add that with
hours of going back and forth using the header and footer toolbar in MS
Word :), guess it's time to post my problem here.

Is there any specific reason of why the page number that appear on a
section does not start with 1?

I have an 70 something pages document that was divided into many
sections -- thank's to the automatic section created by using column
--, and basically what I want to have is just a continuous page
numbering from the start to the end (i.e. 1 - 70). Sounds simple,
right?

The problem is that it appears that each section starts with their own
page number. OK, so what do I have to do is go through each section,
and on the Header and Footer toolbar, I have to click Format Page
Number --> Continue From Previous Section. That would produce the page
numbering scheme I wanted, shouldn't it? Apparrently, no :(.

The first page of each section -- stubbornly -- keep on showing as "2".
Why?

So I tried another way. I change the "Continue From Previous Section"
option to "Start at", but whenever I put a number in that form, what is
shown in the page always automatically increased by 1. Why?

Is there somebody who faced the same problem here or can give me a
guidance of how to achieve my (sound) simple page numbering scheme?

Thank's a bunch.

PS.
For you who doesn't mind to look at the sample file I am using, it's
available here (it's small in size, 55 KB):
http://s34.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1I152GIN5UCVQ29W8395LOQ2PZ

Sorry for using the free file hosting service, don't have any idea
where to put that file anywhere else. That file should be virus free,
at least that's what my McAfee Virus Scan here told me, and so what
Yahoo! Mail Virus Scan agree with.

First thing I would do is get rid of the column layouts. You can do that by
inserting 2-column tables. In the first row, put your picture caption, in
the second insert your pictures. Second thing I would do is get rid of the
page numbers altogether. You've used Insert-->Page number, which I hate
because it puts page numbers in frames that can be moved around easily;
instead use the # sign button on the header/footer toolbar. As for fixing
your page numbering the way it is, it would take a bit of time to figure out
why it's doing it. I can't figure it out in just a couple minutes. If you
decide not to use the table layouts, I will look into it further, but
strongly encourage you to do that.

You may have multiple section breaks on a single page and thus not be
accessing each of the sections through the header/footer view. Go into
normal view with section breaks displayed and check each section Insert >
Page Number... > Format (button) dialog.

Another way to get to this dialog is with the following macro:

Sub PageNumberFormatShow()
application.Dialogs(wdDialogFormatPageNumber).Show
End Sub

I'm sure that someone could write a macro that cycles through each section
and sets the same as previous switch for page numbering to true, but I don't
have the time to try right now.

Okay, I looked at your sample file, and I confess it defeated all my efforts
at analysis. As far as I can see, numbering is set to "Continue from
previous section" in every section (even the "hidden" ones in the middle of
the page). The page numbers are genuine { PAGE } fields, and if I insert a
PAGE field in the document itself, it also reflects the faulty numbering. I
couldn't find any way to fix this using the usual methods. What *will* work,
however, is to delete all the section breaks, then restore them. By the way,
if all those empty paragraphs reflect actual usage (for page formatting),
please substitute paragraph formatting and page breaks as needed!

While you're at it, delete the framed page number and insert the number in
your actual footer (see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/HeaderFooter.htm). You'll need to modify
the Footer paragraph/style, as the tab stops are in the wrong place for the
current margin settings and even right alignment won't help because the
paragraph has a right indent. Press Ctrl+Q to reset the style, then move the
tab stops as needed.

Thank's everyone for the efforts and answers.

Get it right finally. What I did was as follows:
- link the footer for (section > 1) to be the same as previous
- remove the current page number (that was inserted using Insert ->
Page Numbers).
- reinsert page number using the # sign button on the header/footer
toolbar --> thank's to Mrs. Anne Troy.
- skimming through each "hidden" section, then format the section
number to continue from the previous section. --> thank's to Mr.
Charles Kenyon.

And it just works.

Oh yeah, and the other tips from Mrs. Suzanne Barnhill is greatly
appreciated.

Lesson learned: not using column the next time I have to format my
document for the photos holder :).

Thank's again.
