Send To-> Mail Recipient (As Attachment) Stops Outlook

I have a machine running Outlook 2003 SP3 configured in cached Exchange mode
from an Exchange server. I have a sporadic issue where if I am in Word,
PowerPoint, or Excel and select File-> Send To-> Mail Recipient (As
Attachment) I am able to attach the file and send the message without a
problem. Upon returning to the Outlook Inbox and selecting a message however,
I receive a message in the Reading Pane stating "The Item Cannot be displayed
in the reading pane." If I try to open a message in the Inbox by
double-clicking it, I receive an error stating "Cannot Open Item". If I
browse to a different folder of any kind, I receive the message "Unable to
display the folder. Another application closed unexpectedly while using your
Personal Folders File".

If I close Outlook and open it back up, it opens without any problem at all
and normal operating resumes. What is causing Outlook to stop functioning
when using Send To-> Mail Recipient? This doesn't seem to happen with every
file only sporadically. Anyone else had this issue?
