SharePoint / Project Standard problem

Jon Smith

I've posted this question over on the SharePoint forum, but since I've gotten
no answer and you can't search the SP forum, I thought I would put it here as
well to see if anyone has seen this problem.

I have MOSS 2007 Standard with all of the latest patches updated and MS
Project 2007 Standard with SP1 & SP2 installed. (No Project Server)

I can't execute the datasheet command for any SP list. If I un-install MS
Project Standard 2007 from my computer, then the datasheet mode works fine
with no other changes to my computer. No other computer without Project has
a problem with the datasheet mode. All computers with Project cannot use the
datasheet mode (you get a datasheet not compatible or active X not installed
error message).

All workstations are the same - all relatively new with 2 G of memory, so
not a memory space problem.

Any thoughts?

I've never heard of that, but is Project the only Office 2007 application
on your client machines? Are they running the previous version of Office,
or the 2007 one?

Not definite, but that could be the root of the issue.

I do not access MOSS server, but use a WSS server. I also have Project
2007 (and 2003) on multiple computers and everything works fine. I also
have both Office 2003 and 2007 running on these same computers.

My hunch is that datasheet mode depends on having the right Excel and IE
components installed on the computer; therefore I'd be looking to a
flawed installation of Excel rather than Project being the culprit.

Yes, Project 2007 is the only Office 2007 app. We're still using Office 2003
on everything, since we're a large place and not every computer has been
replaced to one that can run 2007. My particular office all has new
computers, but IT won't give us Office 2007 until everyone has a new computer.

Project is definitely the problem - you uninstall it and the datasheet
works. Unfortunately we don't have any Project Professional licenses, so I
can't see if there's a different response between standard and professional
by SP.

Any ideas on things to bring up to my IT staff from your hunch as to why it
is source of the problem?

Jon,

This is truly a "wicked" problem. My thoughts:

: since Project 2007 is the problem ... can you use Project 2003 instead?
: can you appeal to the IT department to do whatever THEY need to do to
make it work. Let them figure it out (often telling IT what the problem
is does no good ... they reserve that right sometimes). Focus on your
"requirements", which include: fully working Project 2007 and SharePoint
datasheets.

(Interestingly, I wasn't aware that Office 2007 had different computer
requirements than Office 2003).
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA101668651033.aspx says the same
hardware will work. Therefore I would question need for a "new computer"
if that is at the expense of real work now.)

No, the datasheet doesn't require Excel on the client as I've seen my tech
reformat my computer with nothing but Windows on it (in a search to see what
was causing the problem) and it worked properly. Office 2003 was loaded next
and again no issues. Project 2007 was loaded and it didn't work.

Any other thoughts? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

No, I have to use 2007 as I'm working with cost resources (and all of their
"joyous" problems.....), so lots of manual entries fixing problems!

IT will eventually open a ticket with MS, but Project and SP are owned by
two different groups within our organization, so they are having to go
through the "it's the other guy's fault" contest right now before calling MS.

I'm not a techie so I have no idea if IT's comment about the memory is
correct or not on Office - sounds as if you are right - however, they won't
let us use it until they replace all of the workstations.

Any other thoughts? Thanks for answering

Like I said, a "wicked problem". You are in the hands of the IT
wizards. Just have to keep pushing and pulling them to do what's
right. And for me "right" would be to get me working with working IT.
