Some Assignments do not show in the OLAP Cube

B

BTOjohn

Dear All,

I administer a smallish set-up of Project Server 2003 SP2a (~100 employees
submit time), with ~30PMs working on Project Professional 2003 SP2.
Everything has been working AOK for many months now, but after the May round
of time submission/acceptance, there are at least a dozen assigments that do
not show in the PA Views. I have tried republishing the assignments, forcing
a binary rebuild of the projects, and the Cube is scheduled to build every
24hrs, so its had many chances to incorporate the info. In the last half hour
I have deleted the cube and so am currently building it from scratch. If this
works, then problem solved, but I wondered whether anyone else had had these
kinds of issues and whether they got to the bottom of it.

Although I am not certain that this is the case, I have a suspicion that
these effected assignments are ones that have been added after the project
had been created and published to the server. The only errors we have been
getting in the event log are 0x8c040017 (I know the reason for this) and more
recently some 0x80040e14, which I am a little more baffled by (typical
message copied below), but these do not seem to refer to the building of the
cube, but are associated with .mpps (I think).

Thanks in advance for your help,

John

Hello BTOjohn,

Have you checked the OLAP cube settings; look for Date range seetings
and verify with resource assignment start/finish dates.

Also when you say, some of the assignments are not showing in PWA
views. Please could you tell us which views are they? The source of
the data for Project Center and and Timesheet views are Project Plan
and publish process. You have to worry about OLAP cube when you won't
see the resource availability and work/actual work etc. in Portfolio
Analyzer.

Apart from this, I noticed the following error on your error log. Also
I didn't see the any error related to OLAP cube in your log.

Hi Ben, Thanks for your interest and the answer is that yes, the affected
tasks all have enterprise resources assigned to them. I have now tried
deleting and rebuilding the Cube, forcing a binary rebuild of an affected
project (as per project experts save offline, change PROJ_EXT_EDITED from 0
to 1 etc.) then rebuilding the cube, publishing project plans on the server
using View Populator Tool, and saving an affected project file as an .mpp,
deleting it from the server and then re-importing it. None of this seems to
be working and there are ~25 assignments that do not show in the cube, which
is pretty critical. Any more ideas will be very happily received. Best, John

Hi Chak,
I have checked the date settings and they are as normal spanning this FY and
next. When I said PWA views, I meant portfolio analyser views only. All other
PWA views seem to be behaving. I did notice this error and thankfully found a
solution to this problem on the MS website (copying timestamp from event log
and pasting it into the relevant table). I responded also to Ben above this,
describing everything else that I have tried - which includes processing the
databse from Analysis Manager. Nothing seems to have worked yet, so any
further help you may be able to offer would be most gratefully received.
Best,
John

Do these tasks have non alphanumeric characters in the tasks names?
Characters that are operands, and quotes can be particularly troublesome in

Gary, thank you for taking the time.

I have had problems with non-alphanumerics in the past and so made it a
training&performance issue, as well as keeping a very close eye on all newly
published projects. I have also checked most of these projects with problems
in the last couple of days and cannot locate any non-alphanumerics.

I am becoming more and more certain that it is a problem with tasks that are
added after the project is originally published. Since my last post I have
"Published All Information" on half of the projects in case there was a
publishing issue and then rebuilt the cube, with no effect.

I then tried the second method of binary rebuild (saved project as .xml,
deleted from server, saved .xml as .mpp, then imported .mpp) and rebuilt the
cube. It claims to have done this successfully, but the project still does
not show up in the PA Views. I then "Processed the database" from Analysis
Manager, but it failed on the first hurdle. Throughout this whole process I
have not had a single error message (last error was mid-afternoon on Monday).

Currently I have deleted the Cube and started building it from scratch
again. All ideas are gratefully received (but I am out of the office tomorrow
and so may not respond till Fri). Thanks in advance.

Dear All,

I administer a smallish set-up of Project Server 2003 SP2a (~100
employees
submit time), with ~30PMs working on Project Professional 2003 SP2.
Everything has been working AOK for many months now, but after the May
round
of time submission/acceptance, there are at least a dozen assigments
that do
not show in the PA Views. I have tried republishing the assignments,
forcing
a binary rebuild of the projects, and the Cube is scheduled to build
every
24hrs, so its had many chances to incorporate the info. In the last
half hour
I have deleted the cube and so am currently building it from scratch.
If this

Hi Gary,
Dingbat you are not! Thanks for this useful link, but I had already sorted
out that specific error earlier in the week and since then have done much of
what I previously described (binary rebuilds of projects, publishing all
info, deleting cube and starting from scratch etc.) so I do not think that
this error is impacting on the fact that some assignments are not showing in
PA views. Your expertise and any other ideas v much apopreciated.
Cheers,
John

Dear All,
In case anyone else has this kind of issue, I had some help locating the
problem and it was due to the Bogdanov Portfolio Analyser Extender licence
expiring. We had a hardware issue a few months ago and had to replace the
motherboard, which interferred with the licence recognition. Once that was
sorted and the cube was rebuilt, then the assignments all turned up in the PA
Views again.
Thanks to all for their suggestions,
John

what I previously described (binary rebuilds of projects, publishing all
info, deleting cube and starting from scratch etc.) so I do not think that
this error is impacting on the fact that some assignments are not showing in
PA views. Your expertise and any other ideas v much apopreciated.
Cheers,
John

I'm a dingbat, I've been away from 2003 for too long but it did hit me that
I knew this one! I think you need to apply the following solution:

Gary, thank you for taking the time.

I have had problems with non-alphanumerics in the past and so made it a
training&performance issue, as well as keeping a very close eye on all
newly
published projects. I have also checked most of these projects with
problems
in the last couple of days and cannot locate any non-alphanumerics.

I am becoming more and more certain that it is a problem with tasks that
are
added after the project is originally published. Since my last post I have
"Published All Information" on half of the projects in case there was a
publishing issue and then rebuilt the cube, with no effect.

I then tried the second method of binary rebuild (saved project as .xml,
deleted from server, saved .xml as .mpp, then imported .mpp) and rebuilt
the
cube. It claims to have done this successfully, but the project still does
not show up in the PA Views. I then "Processed the database" from Analysis
Manager, but it failed on the first hurdle. Throughout this whole process
I
have not had a single error message (last error was mid-afternoon on
Monday).

Currently I have deleted the Cube and started building it from scratch
again. All ideas are gratefully received (but I am out of the office
tomorrow
and so may not respond till Fri). Thanks in advance.

John

Do these tasks have non alphanumeric characters in the tasks names?
Characters that are operands, and quotes can be particularly troublesome
in
SQL.

Hi Chak,
I have checked the date settings and they are as normal spanning this
FY
and
next. When I said PWA views, I meant portfolio analyser views only. All
other
PWA views seem to be behaving. I did notice this error and thankfully
found a
solution to this problem on the MS website (copying timestamp from
event
log
and pasting it into the relevant table). I responded also to Ben above
this,
describing everything else that I have tried - which includes
processing
the
databse from Analysis Manager. Nothing seems to have worked yet, so any
further help you may be able to offer would be most gratefully
received.
Best,

Description:
Attempted to insert duplicate

Have you noticed this?

Thanks

Dear All,

I administer a smallish set-up of Project Server 2003 SP2a (~100
employees
submit time), with ~30PMs working on Project Professional 2003 SP2.
Everything has been working AOK for many months now, but after the
May
round
of time submission/acceptance, there are at least a dozen assigments
that do
not show in the PA Views. I have tried republishing the assignments,
forcing
a binary rebuild of the projects, and the Cube is scheduled to build
every
24hrs, so its had many chances to incorporate the info. In the last
half hour
I have deleted the cube and so am currently building it from
scratch.
If this
works, then problem solved, but I wondered whether anyone else had
had
these
kinds of issues and whether they got to the bottom of it.

Although I am not certain that this is the case, I have a suspicion
that
these effected assignments are ones that have been added after the
project
had been created and published to the server. The only errors we
have
been
getting in the event log are 0x8c040017 (I know the reason for this)
and more
recently some 0x80040e14, which I am a little more baffled by
(typical
message copied below), but these do not seem to refer to the
building
of the
cube, but are associated with .mpps (I think).

Thanks in advance for your help,

John
