Strange line break character in Powerpoint 2008 for Mac

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Hi,

I'm designing a master set of templates in powerpoint 2008 for Mac. I'm using master layout text placeholders to designate text to certain areas, but after every line I've written, a strange character appears, even though I haven't typed it in, nor am I allowed to remove it either.

If I've made a line break, the character appears in the presentations that are using the template as well. If I haven't made a line break in the template, it won't appear in the presentation, but still appear in the layout design mode using the template.

Can you help me get rid of this strange character? I haven't been switching between office versions or office and open office or anything of that kind.
