Using connectors in Word

H

hmm

In Office 2000, connectors can be drawn in Excel but not in Word. I want to
draw using connectors in Word. Some of the drawing objects will contain
cross-references to numbered items in the Word document, so creating in Excel
and pasting to Word does not seem like an option. Does anyone know if and
how this can be done?

In order to use connectors the shapes must be drawn in the Drawing Canvas.
If that is turned OFF (Tools>Options>General - "Automatically create Drawing
Canvas..." You can either turn it back on or go to Insert>Picture>New
Drawing for each canvas you want to add to the doc.

Hi CyberTaz,

Ahhh. Except that the Drawing Canvas was introduced in Word 2002, and the OP
has Word 2000. There was a special d/l, the name of which escapes me today,
that one needed to install in order to get Connectors in Word. No idea if
it's still available, given that support for Office 2000 expired a couple of
months ago. But if it is, it will be on the Office site at microsoft.com

(Something like Draw98...)

I always get the name of this add-in wrong, so I usually wait for Bob
Buckland to come along and provide it, but my recollection was that it was
needed in order to have connectors in Word 97; I thought they were part of
the drawing tools from the get-go in Word 2000.

OOOOOps! Missed that one... been meaning to get new goggles for some time
now. Thanks for the correction, Cindy - and what a great memory!

For the OP -

Draw 98 is still available for d/l here;

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...78-B1FF-48F1-8302-4893EE8120B9&displaylang=EN

And once installed the instructions for deploying it in Word 2000 are
simply;

Use Microsoft Draw 98 as your picture editor within Word.To set Microsoft
Draw 98 as your picture editor: 1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2. On the Edit tab, select Microsoft Draw 98 from the Picture editor
list.

Thanks for posting that link... btw, this brings to mind one of my
continuing frustrations with Word. Is there any way to get other tools in
the list of picture editors?? I want to be able to select Paint Shop Pro as
my picture editor. I've submitted it as a feature request to the folks at
Jasc (before Corel bought PSP) but nothing's ever come of it.

Thanks

Mike

Nope, you're limited to Word and MS Photo Editor (if installed). You can't
even get other MS products, so it's not discrimination against third
parties.

Thanks. I downloaded and tried to install, but it said it can't because I
don't have any Office '97 component installed (probably since I only have
Office 2000).

Any ideas?

Bob Buckland ?:-\)

For Office 2000, MS Draw98 can be installed from Office CD #2. You can run setup from that CD or you can use the listing for
Microsoft Office 2000 CD2
from Add=>Remove programs in the Windows control Panel.

I would've thought someone would have come up with a registry hack for this
one by now. Seems like this is something that any number of folks would love
to be able to do. <sigh>

Thanks
