Using Data Analysis in Project Server 2007

We have run into a problem where we can run Data Analysis (the OLAP cube
viewer) in PWA 2007, but only if we are logged into the database server
itself. From a client PC, we get "The query could not be processed. Cannot
connect to the server '{server}'. The server is either not started or too
busy."

When I try to build a Data Analysis view, I eventually see the message,
"Failed to connect to the Analysis Services server. Verify the server name
and try again."

I have read and I think I have configured the servers (we have a three
server, three tier system, like a Medium Farm, with SQL Server 2005 SP1)
using these postings:

+
http://blogs.msdn.com/brismith/arch...ver-2005-analysis-service-building-cubes.aspx
+
http://blogs.msdn.com/brismith/archive/2007/02/14/common-error-messages-when-building-cubes.aspx (both from Brian Smith's blog)
+ The downloadable book from Technet on Deployment for Office Project Server
2007
(http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/f/?en-us/library/74fdb442-3771-422a-a8e8-67dbdedac44a1033.mspx)

And I still can't get it to work. It feels like a permissions issue, since I
can do what I want to do from the database server, just nowhere else. But
I've put service accounts into all the local Administrators groups on my
three servers.

Anybody have any ideas? Thank you!

Did you install MSXML6 and SQLServer20005_ASOLEDB9 on each of the client
machines? I had the same or similar error and installing the above two
components from Microsoft fixed my problem.

I thought you were kidding about installing more software on the "client"
machines. I installed both of these on my laptop, and darned if I stopped
getting my original error message. Now I get a new one: "The system detected
a possible attempt to compromise security."

It feels like forward progress. I only installed msxml6.msi and
SQLServer2005_ASOLEDB9.msi. Is there something else to install or am I know
in the realm of a permissions problem?

Thanks for your help, Colin!

Sounds like a permissions problem now. You may want to check your security
settings within IE. Make sure your PWA site has been added as a trusted
site and the security is set to low.

I've discovered now that I still have the problem I mention below ("possible
attempt to compromise security"), but my customer does not. I installed the
ASOLE piece and they are working fine. (Bad abbreviation, though.)

I am not. One big and possibly important difference is that I don't log on
to their domain when I boot up my laptop. Instead, I just provide my
customer-supplied username and password when I navigate over to PWA. Maybe
the system is asking me for my credentials but I don't have a way to provide
them? Is there a workaround for this?

Thanks again, Colin.

I fixed my "possible attempt to compromise security" problem by adding an
entry for the database server in Manage Passwords (in User Accounts in the
Control Panel).

A working OLAP cube view is a beautiful thing.
