When I crop a photo it gets stretched

When I crop a photo in publisher the picture inside the area I crop is
stretching out. It's very strange and I can't seem to figure out why
it is happening. I am using Publisher 2007.

Try cropping your photo before inserting it in Publisher.

I could do that but it kind of defeats the purpose of the crop tool.

Try View > Pictures > Detailed Display. The "fast resize and zoom
option" plays fast and loose with the cropping to allow snappier
display. Both options will print the pictures the same, it's only screen
preview that is affected.

Is it possible that after using the Crop tool
you are resizing the cropped image to fill
a particular space by dragging the Side or
Top handles? You can maintain the aspect
ratio of an image when resizing if you only
drag the Corner handles.

My personal preference is to do all of my editing outside of the program.
The only thing I will do inside Publisher is to size it to fit.
