Why don't my connectors snap to my autoshapes?

When I use the drawing toolbar, I add a flowchart shape and then I add
another. So now I have two boxes. The office assistant is telling me that
when I select a connector from the drawing-->flowchart menu, the connector
should automatically snap to these two boxes. It also says that when you run
your mouse over the box, the connecting points should be shown in blue. None
of this is happening for me. I tried restoring defaults but still I cannot
get connector points on my flowchart autoshapes. Please help. Also the office
assistant is telling me that if I right click the flowchart shape, I should
get an option to "Add Text" but this isn't happening either. Any suggestions?

If you are using Word 2003 (and perhaps 2002), connectors work only in a
drawing canvas (Insert | Picture | New Drawing).
