Word crashed!!

When you're computer crashes, as it just happened to me, Word maintains a
copy of the last saved document, right? (please say yes). If so, where can I
find that? Help please!! Thank you.

(I'm using Microsoft Word 2000.)

go to
Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Office -> Microsoft Office Tools
and open Microsoft Office Application Recovery Tool.
In the tool select appropriate Application (Excel/World/ect) and click
Recover Application.

the usual location i look for are
C:\ Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Word"
C:\ Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp

also make sure that in word/excel
tools->options->Save
AutoRecover option is checked for future crashes!

KC, thanks for your response. Just to make sure that I explained myself
correctly. I am trying to recover a document, not the application. The
application works just fine, but I lost some information I had entered in a
document I was editing. That's what I'm trying to recover, a document, not
the application.

When you open the document that was open during the crash, you should
get the Recovered form of it, with some notes about when and how it
was recovered.

Unless it had never been Saved in the first place.

If you have AutoRecovery enabled (which it is by default, I believe), and
the document was edited long enough for an AutoRecovery backup to be saved,
it will be presented to you when you next start Word. And of course the last
manually saved version will also be available (and may be more recent than
the AutoRecovery backup if you have saved frequently).

Peter, yes, that's what usually happens, but this time it did not. That's
why I was asking, because it didn't automatically open the recovered file
when I opened the regular file after the crash. I don't know why???

Suzanne, unfortunately that didn't happen. You're right, on previous
occasions when I've had crashes, what you describe is usually what
happens--except this time. And when I go to Tools and check, yes,
AutoRecovery is enabled.

Yeah, sometimes it just doesn't work, though I find that it is much more
reliable in Word 2003 than previous versions because Word saves the file
*as* it's crashing (unfortunately not the case when it hangs).

Autorecovery was poor in Word 2000, but if an autorecovery file was saved
Word stores its recovery files at %appdata%\Microsoft\Word - enter this line
in the address bar of your browser, which will open the folder and see if
there is a filename *.asd present. You *may* be able to open it in Word.

Whether you can recover the document or not, see also

caused by the crash and help prevent the problem re-occurring.
