12.1.1 connection to update server interrupted (Message)

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

The subject message has been repeated every time I have tried to download the update since its release. The server can't still be busy, can it? I've checked my connection settings and everything is fine.
This seems to be a different problem than not seeing the Office volume on the hard disk.
Any help would be very much appreciated!

* Try a different browser.
* Check free space on your drive. You need a minimum of 10% for free space.
* Restart your computer.

Are you on Comcast? This type of problem for Comcast users has popped up in
the past.

If Comcast is the ISP provider they are having a problem with the DNS
servers. The fix is to go to the TCP/IP and enter 68.87.64.196 then on the
next line type 68.87.66.196. Click apply and go back to the Microsoft
Mactopia download page and get the update.

Thanks Diane, but I'm having exactly the same issue (I already posted another question about this). I do not have Comcast, but rather use a local ISP here in Taos. I tried your suggestion with the two additional DNS sites. However, nothing works. I've tried both Safari and Firefox as browsers and get the return message that the browser cannot find the the server download.microsoft.com. Any other suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Marty Hewlett

I have been having the same problem for 3 days. After Safari I tried Opera
and got "unable to connect to remote Server" message. I've tried re-booting
and repairing disk permissions with no luck. I've also tried to download the
update in the various language options, from the Mactopia site, with the same
result.

Someone on another list contacted Comcast and they are going to fix their
servers. You might want to contact your ISP.

I have notified the Mactopia people about the problem as well.

Thanks to everyone for taking part in this discussion.

My ISP in Canada is Sympatico; perhaps they were having comparable issues with their servers as Comcast.

Before I could contact them, I thought I'd try one last time through AutoUpdate to download the latest Office 2008 update ... and, much to my amazement. it worked!

Perhaps it had something to do with Diane's notifying the Mactopia people.

Many, many thanks!

Hi, everyone:

I solved my problem by adding to additional DNS servers to my network system preferences. I discovered this because my wife's MacBook Pro (not Intel) is able to connect to receive updates. Here are the DNS servers that worked for me: 209.188.112.3 and 63.81.160.11. I don't know if this will work for anyone else, but on my end, so far so good.

Thanks,

Marty Hewlett

Who knows. I'm just glad it's working now.

One more piece of information that might be of help to some. It turns out that my DNS servers used by my ISP were just fine for reaching the Microsoft update site. Apparently my MacBook had picked up a Trojan horse which replaced by normal DNS servers with two Ukranian servers (or so my ISP informed me). I had to clean those from my system. I used a very handy procedure recommended by folks at MacWorld (http://www.macworld.com/article/60823/2007/10/trojanhorse.html). I don't know if this will be of help to anyone else having similar problems.

I've been receiving this same message for several weeks now. Given previous
problems with Office updates and no issues with my connection outside of
Office, I'm going on the assumption that this is another MS problem that
eventually (hopefully) will be corrected.

YOU MAY BE INFECTED WITH A DNS CHANGER TROJAN
BROWSE TO WWW.DNSCHANGER.COM AND DOWNLOAD THE ONE FOR MAC AND RUN IT. IT WILL TELL YOU IF IT REMOVED THE TROJAN AND THEN PERFORM THE UPDATES
