1and1.com Hosting

Thomas A. Rowe

I have a client that is considering 1and1.com hosting (Windows Platform). I would like to get your
thoughts on them (the good, the bad and the ugly), especially about their support.

If you read all their FAQ and tutorials you won't need any support.

I'm running 7 sites with them and the only problem I had was not reading the
tutorials.

I can't think of a reason to contact them because everything is available
via a control panel.
Not much extra stuff tho. On the *nix* platform.

I have 2 more sites on Yahoo Small business, and their support is
questionable at best.

I could give you my referral, but this is not the proper venue.

Aloha,

Wes

So you are not using their Windows IIS hosting, just Unix/Linux?

Thank you for replying.

Thanks, but I am not looking for a web host, I just want to know people's thoughts on 1and1.com. I
am completely happy with my web host.

Thomas - I started with a *nix account on 1and1 about a year ago - that was
OK. Then went to a Windows hosting account fairly recently - OK originally,
but over 6 weeks ago my web space developed a problem that still has not
been fixed, despite many lo-o-o-ong phone calls to 1and1 support, despite
four times me being told that the problem had been sent to their sys admin
(in Germany), despite me being told on at least four occasions that the
problem would be fixed within 48 hours and that I would be e-mailed with
progress - never an email have I seen. I've sent emails to
[email protected], filled in the "How was the quality of our support?"
questionnaires that they bot-email to me, called them time and again, but
still have the same problems. Basically, when I try to publish a sub-web
from 1and1 using FP2003, the publish starts off OK, but then slows right
down, stops, and I get a "Server timed out"-type message. They confirm that
there is a problem (they've also doen a publish and get the same result, but
have not yet fixed it. I'm now using another host, but am hoping to
eventually get my 1and1 account back. Hope this helps.

Ok, I've had it also with my host - I'm on a reseller plan with
buywebhost.com .... which I've been on for a couple years now - and the
price is great (500meg $10/month) - unlimited domains - but ... they go down
frequently...it's been a while since they've been down, but today...they've
been down since early this morning and are still down....I've put in a
couple of help tickets and so far no luck....so now all my clients have no
websites...and no mail....what does happen to email - anyone know? is it
lost or will it come thru once the site goes back up?

either way...I need to find a more reliable host - one that will allow
unlimitd domains and that is also reasonable - linux platform is fine - at
this point don't need windows

any suggestions?

thanks!

for a very similar deal only with stellar hosting and support see Eugene at
www.arendkay.net you'll have to contact them as their reseller package is
"unadvertised".

I'm on the other side of the coin as I think I'm going to need
a ton more space. A website similar to mine just took their entire
photo archive to subscriber-only and for good reason. According to my
rough guesstimate they have over 261GB of images in their database !

Can anyone tell me where I can get a good deal on a 50GB shell
to start with ?

Well, my server finally rose from the dead - the sites are working (I have
about 20 sites I maintain) but none of the email addys for the domains are
working...which is weird...I've contacted them again this morning... but all
day and night is too long...I'm seriously looking to switch.

Well, I went to this site, Chris, tried to get into the contact us page -
and came up with a page not found ... not good :) ... I'll try later and
see what happens.

thanks
Pam

but I have no personal experience with godaddy so I can't recommend them
over something I do have experience with. ;-)

I can't find a reseller plan on godaddy - and am having a lot of difficulty
figuring out if the planet is suitable for what I'm looking for -

Ah ! I see. Thanks for the follow up.

I did try Godaddy for my basic account. Their interface isn't
very good. 8-95.com uses DirectAdmin which is really a good UI. You
can see it at http://www.directadmin.com/ . I think Godaddy is
building their own as it doesn't have near the features of DirectAdmin
or CPanel X (http://www.cpanel.net/). I note that Godaddy does use
Plesk on their dedicated servers though.

I do find Godaddy's support to be exceptional though they did
have difficulty in getting a ASP account setup for me. I setup a UNIX
account instead and it was working before I got of the phone. The rep
even made sure that we could both FTP into it before he let me go.

Also while waiting shopping around I came across this thread
