Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel I have 1 xlsx file and 1 xls file which does not open in Leopard 10.5.8..They were placed in the Dock.
When I started the computer both the files had a big ?. I get the error message when trying to open the files in Leopard using Excel 2008 for the Mac: "Excel cannot open this file. The file might have been damaged or modified from it's original format."
I have tried to upload in Google doc's and to open in Numbers. No result.
Who has other suggestion to restore these files?

The "Dock" is conceptual, not a physical storage location. IOW: When you add
something to the Dock an "Alias" or "shortcut" to that item is created. The
item stays right where it originally was but the alias in the Dock enables
convenient access to open/launch that item -- provided that the item does
not later get moved, renamed or deleted. If either happens the alias in the
Dock can't find what it's looking for. Sounds like that's what has happened
here... The icons representing the files remain in the Dock but the files
they point to have been altered in some way.

Thanks, Bob, for this clarification.
Question remains: how could the files be altered, providing I did not change my start up procedures.

Well, that's hard for me to say. Usually it's because we inadvertently
delete a file or the folder containing it or move he file to another
location without realizing it had been added to the Dock. It could also be
that the file is actually stored on a volume which isn't mounted ‹ that can
easily happen if the file was stored on something such as USB stick when
you dragged it to the Dock.
