2000-> 2003 - now accessing Word and PPT network docs take forever

billd

We have upgraded a number of systems from Office 2000 and some OXP to Office
2003 (also upgraded the O/S from 2000 to Windows XP). All the latest service
packs and patches have been applied.

We now have a site that is having to wait 5-10 minutes to open a 60 pg word
document from a server across the LAN. Prior to the upgrades it took about
2-3 minutes to load... Excel documents on the same server folder load fine
(and they are even larger. sizewise, than this word document...)

Can anyone offer a suggestion where to look, we've checked and optimized the
settings for Word as well as saved up and saved back the documents. (by the
way - it's on all Word or PowerPoint docs, not just this one that has become
our test doc.) We also changed the default printer and turned off the virus
checking software to test. No luck ... doc loads pages 1/2 and hangs there
for roughly 7 mins before finally loading up and allowing scrolling or access
to the remaining 62 pages....

Hi billd,

Does the issue only occur with the Word/PPT documents on the specific server? When you open documents from other shared folder on
other server/client computers, does the same issue occur?

Create a new Word document on the server and try to open it again. What is the result?

As the issue occurs on several client computers, let's work the issue on one of the computers to narrow down it.

#1 check the template
-----------------------
1. Open a Word document on the server in Word 2003.
2. Click the Tools menu > Templates and addins > delete the templates and click OK.
3. Save the document and reopen it. What is the result?

#2 disconnect the mapping drives to test the issue
----------------------
1. In My Computer, click the Tools menu > Disconnect Network Drives.
2. If there are network drives, highlight them to disconnect it.
3. Try to open the Word document on the server again. What is the result?
4. If it is not related to the network drives, please reconnect to the network drive as needed.

#3 Test the issue under Windows safe mode with network
---------------------
To come into Windows safe mode, please follow the steps below:
Windows safe mode: All the third-party software and the unnecessary hardware driver (such as printers, video card) is disabled.

1. Restart your computer
2. Keep press F8, until the screen "Windows Advanced Options Menu" appears.
3. Press "Up arrow" in the keyboard to select "Safe Mode with network", press "Enter"
4. Open a Word document on the server again. What is the result?

#4 test the issue under Word safe mode
-------------------
Under Word safe mode, it doesn't load the third party add-ins, the global template normal.dot, Word setting registry keys, and the files
in the startup folder.
1. Restart the computer into normal mode.
2. Click Start > Run > type winword /a, click OK.
3. Click File > Open to open the files on the server. What is the result?

Perform the above steps and let me know the result. If the issue persists, run Procmon.exe to get the process monitor log file.
- Restart the computer. Download procmon.exe
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processmonitor.mspx
- Run procmon.exe
- Stop the current logging by clicking on the magnifying glass button.
- Clear the current log by clicking on the eraser button.
- Start the capturing by clicking on the magnifying glass button.
- Reproduce the issue via one of the repro processes that you have noted the symptoms from.
- Stop the capturing by clicking on the magnifying glass button.
- Click the File menu > Save to save the file as Issue.pml.
- Zip up and send the resulting log files to me at (e-mail address removed).

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Regards,

Emily Lin
