2000 and XP

I thought I removed 2000 and installed XP, but at start up 2000 still shows
on desktop, why? From Control Panel, when I look at applications, XP is
listed as installed, while 2000 is not listed. Yet I seem to be running 2000!
What's going on?

The label on desktop shortcuts might not have been modified during
installation (especially if they are 2000 shortcuts you manually added - the
uninstall/install routines didn't know they were there, they didn't create
them). The same type of thing can happen if you manually move shortcuts
between folders in the Start menu: Uninstall routines don't "see" their new
locations, creating orphans. In this case your shortcuts happen to point to
new versions of the uninstalled files (executable filenames don't change
between Office versions) so the shortcuts aren't orphans, just incorrectly
named.

The real test is what the apps say when you open them. In any Office app,
select Help>About (app name). They should all say XP, not 2000.

As long as that is the case, right click on your offending shortcuts &
rename them.

HTH,

Thank you very much. You help is greatly appreciated. I did check (the help
button) and it says Word 2002. I will get my IT guy here to really check
things out. It's getting too much for me, of that I am sure!

The real test is what the apps say when you open them. In any Office app,
I should have said: "They should all say 2002." My bad. (I was mentally
focusing on them not saying 2000)

Office XP is supposed to install Word 2002, etc. There is *technically* no
such thing as Word XP. XP was *only* the name of the Suite. The Suite was
comprised of applications named 2002. A bit confusing, but when used in
reference to Office products, XP & 2002 are the same thing and often used
interchangably.

George you are the best! Thanks for all your help. You answered my questions
exactly with what I needed. That doesn't ususally happen! Many, many thanks!
