2002 Server Extensions - MSN Info Server IIS 4.0 Needed??

F

Frank Schoenfelder

Me again............

In process of obtaining FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions on a
download....the help section said I must first install Microsoft Internet
Information Server (IIS) 4.0!! in order to activate the Server Extension
downloads. Do I really need this? Or....is there a "workaround".

Thanks for responding, Kathleen

Here is the "skinny"

a. I signed up with a PAID Bravenet Account ...AND...placed a Bravenet
Template at the URL

b. In the interium, I purchased a FrontPage 2002 Pgm with intention of
building OFFLINE the complete website and then publishing it at the stated
URL web location

c. FrontPage 2002 says it cannot publish (using http) uncless there are
server extensions on site (which makes sense)

d. When I went to MSN and dowloaded the server extensions for FP 2002, they
said I could NOT install them without installing Microsoft Internet
Information (IIS) 4.0!
e. It sounds as though the whole process is somehow getting me into
something else like they think I am the server or something which I am not.
I have Windows XP Professional

f. What say you??

Cool, or as the kids say: "Phat".

Now.............for a sixty something "retard", I been reading and reading!
Somewhere, I specifically remember the advice that extension servers were to
be installed to do what I wanted to do. The uncertainty is if it was a
"push" information hunk from Bravenet or a "pull" tidbit of info. offered
somewhere in the FrontPage 2002 advice.

I am/was hesitating in going immediately "back there" (Bravenet) because I
am feeling just a tad bit of overload if what I am saying sounds
plausible/probable. But..........I really, really appreciate - Kathleen
Anderson - your immediate knowledgeable and help along these issues. You are
a great help.

Question, what are the specifics between doing this stuff through FTP or
http xfer ... communication with the site. I know those are different
methods, of course, but what are the consequences of the use of one over the
other? This is just for my old, diseased, faltering brain...my curiosity.

Thanks Again....I am waiting your reply.

Using FTP publishing FrontPage run-time components (including forms,
hit-counters, discussion web, guestbook) will fail with error
messages. Depending on the server, you may be able to use FrontPage
to publish with FTP and keep track of changes, but this is not always
the case. Some FTP servers are not compatible with FrontPage, and a
third party FTP client (such as CuteFTP) must be used to move files
to/from the server.

Using HTTP publishing most FrontPage run-time components will work
(the host can switch components off). Publishing with HTTP will
enable FP to track changes and thus minimise upload times.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;281532 lists
those components that require the extensions.

Shared Borders, Dynamic Web Templates, Include pages do not require
extensions to work.

You do not need the extensions on your own PC in order to create pages
in FrontPage, they *are* needed on the server you publish to, and must
be installed by the host.
If you install IIS and extensions on your own PC, you can test the
run-time components before uploading.

I say: since you're running Windows XP Pro, you can install IIS 5.1
on your PC and install the FrontPage 2002 server extensions:

However, in order to take advantage of what the server extensions
offer, you need to find out if Bravenet supports them.

Thank you Ron. I appreciate the information. I have checked with Bravenet
and they tell me they support all FrontPage 2000 thru 2003! I must turn them
on they inform me. (note new post above in the newsgroup).
