2003 and transparency

I have just upgraded from 2000. Under Format, Background and Fill Effects
there is a transparency option that always seems to be greyed out. What is
this option used for and how can you make it active?

This is an option you can use to set up the transparency of fill colors for
AutoShapes and such.

I think you are referring to something different. I want to know what
transparency does in relation to slide backgrounds (Format, Background, Fill
Effects).

When you use fill effects on ashape in the foreground you can use this to
apply a % transparency to the gradient colours so that you can see through
the shape. Since you cant have a transparent background (what would you see
through it!?) this is greyed out in format background.
