2003 Database saved as 2000 Version

I have recently upgraded to Office 2003. However, when I create a database in
Access it saves it as a 2000 version. If I use the tool menu to convert to
2003, it tells me the database already exists even though I give it a dummy
name like "xxx".

Any suggestions?

ACCESS 2003's default "format" is ACCESS 2000. Unless you change the
settings (Tools | Options | Advanced | Default File Format), it will always
create a new database in 2000 format.

You cannot have two files with the same name, even if they are in different
formats.

Hi Kester,

I'm not sure why you are getting the database already exists message, unless
the database truly exist by that name. Have you verified that no such file
already exist, by using Windows Explorer and navigating to the folder? You
might want to use the detail view (View > Details) in Windows Explorer.

You can set the default file format under Tools > Options for all new
databases. (I'm not sure of the exact tab, since I'm still running Access
2002). However, before you do that, you might want to reconsider converting
to the latest file format until you are ready to create a .mde file (if
that's what you want to do). The reason I say this can be found in this KB
(Knowledge Base) article:

Database bloat is not stopped by compacting database with Access 2002 format

An exception would be if you needed to use some functionality that was only
provided by first converting to the 2002/2003 file format.
