2003 Project Server: update tasks from Update tab: Operation Faile

We're getting an interesting error message that popped up in the last few
weeks on selected workstations:

Operation Failed

You are attempting to connect to a Micrsoft Project Central Server which is
not supported by this version of project.

We've looked at the client and the server release code numbers (11.XXXX.such
and such) and they agree with SP2 on both.

Any clues?
