upgraded 2003 wont open old files

I recently upgraded to 2003 office. Since then none of
my old files will open. It just says "documentname.doc
not available". I ran an update and downloaded some
files but it still wont open them.

This is symptomatic of the Norton Antivirus Office Plugin. If you are
running Norton, disable the Plugin by right-clicking on the Norton icon
in the system tray, then left clicking on Configure Norton Antivirus |
Miscellaneous | uncheck the "Enable Office Plugin" box.

I have had the same problem but I removed norton antivirus
long ago. I use Avast antivirus. Is the solution similar
for this product or are there Norton files left behind
somewhere that I need to remove manually?

It's possible that the Norton .dll is still registered in Windows. Try
searching for the OfficeAV.dll file (include hidden files and
directories) on your computer. If you find it, click on Start | Run,
and in the Open dialog box, type the command (including quotes):

"C:\Windows\System32\Regsvr32" -U "C:\<path>\OfficeAV.dll"

Replace <path> with the directory path for your OfficeAV.dll file.
Click on OK. Hopefully you will get the message: "DllUnregisterServer
in C:\<path>\OfficeAV.dll succeeded."

I haven't heard anything about Avast Antivirus causing this problem.
