After reloading an image and even after replacing the motherboard, Office
2003 Word and Excel are extremely slow to open. I tried repairing, I tried
deleting and installing the half dozen basic fonts. I reloaded my previous
settings.

If you replace a mobo you generally have to repair install win, and install
chipset drivers specific to your new mobo.
