2007 Compression

Note that "automatically perform basic compression on save" is selected by
default, so your images will actually be compressed when you save the file.

Ahh..that's what the OP was looking for.
If you save in the PPTX format, they are also going to be run through a
zip compression (a PPTX file is essentially a zip file).
