2007: doc created from network template gives locked msg on re-ope

Cheryle Dyk

In Word 2007, we have templates stored on the network. The template I'm
currently testing is agenda.dotm.
I have the network location set up as the workgroup templates location in
File Locations and set up as trusted in the trust center.

From office btn | New | My templates, I select agenda.dotm to create a new
document from. I filled in some test data and saved as a .docx file in My
Documents.

When I re-open the .docx file, I get a "Agenda.dotm is locked for editing by
'another user' Do you want to: open a read only copy, etc."

I tested this same process with the dotm file local (changing all
appropriate locations and trust settings) and it does not give this same
message.

What's going on here? We really would like these templates to remain stored
on the network (we currently have over 300 templates stored on the network
for use by our staff members using Word 2003 -- we are in process of a
conversion to Office 2007)

Thanks!

Which template are the documents trying to access when you open them?

Although the network template files remain locked for editing, are you still
able to edit the documents (.docx) files you created from those templates,
including using the original network template features?

I've seen this issue in other posts online and am curious to find the
answer, as well.

We have a set of custom templates (.dotx files) store don a network drive.
Our Workgroup templates location is set to this network drive. when creating
a New document in Word from one of those templates, I get the message
described by Cheryle below, saying that the template file is locked for
editing. If I hit cancel, the new document is still created based on the
template, so it's not a huge problem, but does get very annoying, and I've no
idea why Word would need to take a lock on a template files each time
somebody creates a document based on it - any thoughts?

We're having the exact problem you describe in your post. Did you ever get an answer?

Best,

Hi Tammie,

What was the problem? Since your post isn't part of any previous thread, I doubt anyone except youy has a clue what you're referring
to.
