2007 Excel can't open

When I try to open Excel, it gives me the message, "Microsoft Excel has
encountered a problem and has to close." It then offers to send a report to
Microsoft and asks if I want to open Excel in Safe Mode. This started
happening after I converted a Personal startup file I was using to 2007
format. It contained a few macros I had created.

I also noticed that Word 2007 did not inherit the macros that I had created
in Word 2002.

Do custom macros die when you upgrade to Office 2007? I'm using XP with all
the latest updates.

Of course I am not sure that the current problem with Excel not wanting to
open in normal mode was caused by my converting that startup file, but
assuming it does, how can I fix Excel so it doesn't look for that file
anymore, since its filename extension has now changed from .xls to .xlsm?

Thanks Patrick, that worked great. I renamed the Startup folder and now
Excel opens, but I don't have my macros. What is the recommended way to
bring old macros into 2007? I have the same need in Word.

You could just rename the file or move it out of the directory and see if
Excel opens then.
