2007 - Multiple Businesses & Growth

Jamie Kasper

I have a 20 user Project 2007 server already and my boss has told me that
other parts of the business are interested in using project too.

As present I have:

Vehicles Business - 20 users

1 x Xeon 3GHz, 1GB server for Project 07 & Sharepoint
1 x Xeon 3.6GHz, 3.5GB server for SQL 2005

The additional requirement is likely to be...

Communications Business - 100 users
IT Service and Delivery - 50 users
A N Other (tbc) - 100 users

Is the solution MOSS/Proj on 1 server and SQL on another going to be
suitable for the 50 and 100 user systsems or should I look at putting the
MOSS onto another box?

or

Should I keep these as individual systems or merge them as one, and what are
the pros/cons of doing this?

and .. If i did merge all 300 users onto one system, what hardware would be
recommended?

lastly...

If I host these systems at our head office (instead of the offices using
them) are there any bandwidth issues I should be aware of??? (20 working
remotely is fine at present)

Thanks,

Jamie

Jamie:

When you throw MOSS into the mix, you're dealing with a lot of wild cards.
You need to predict your usage to answer this question. In general, your
servers are fairly light in resources. I wouldn't deploy without dual procs
and 2 - 3 gig RAM on the Web Front Ends.I'd want them to be beefier even
without MOSS.

Thanks Gary, I'll keep the businesses on different servers then and make sure
the next one we build it a little beefier!

That'll teach management to let the consultant spec the box!
