2007 - Path problem/Could not create the work file error

A

Adr

Hi,

I have just done an upgrade from 2003 to 2007 Std ed RTM. Using filemon
from systernals, I think I know what the problem is, but can't figure out how
to solve it. In outlook/word (as its the editor) I get 'Could not create the
work file. Check the temp environment variable.' whenever I try to open an
email, or get pictures in an email or even use the preview pane.

In excel, if I open a document stored in my documents, a redirected folde to
H:\ I get a file not found error. I should note in case, this folder is an
offline folder as well but I am online and synched OK.

In either circumstance, if I watch filemon as this is happening, office apps
are trying to go to h:\myname\whatever it needs to do - this is the problem -
somwhere in some variable/path it is inserting my name in frot of everything
which is wrong! It should just be h:\. The thing is, the user and system
temp varieables have/were set to c:\windows\temp before the upgrade. I have
searched the registry for H:\myname and have no hits. Any ideas on how to
correct this? I have tried repairing several times, even with emptying the
temp folder.

TIA

It's not a managed newsgroup. The only people replying here are other
users, your peers, who volunteer their time.
Keep also in mind that the US is (mostly) on Thanksgiving vacation.

Go into the Office button menu, Word Options, Advanced and click on File
Locations. I think there you'll find the paths you are looking for.

Well, I am logged in to my Technet Sub and clicked the link to managed
newsgroups and it puts me here. It eeven says these are mananged!

I check what you said in all office applications and the paths are all valid
and correct. Beats me what to do from here, of course I guess i need to
spend three hours uninstalling every office app, clean the reistry if
possible and then try reinstalling only to find the same problem I suspect.
Ahh well, I should have known better. Any idea how to find the REAL managed
newsgroups ?

Lovely. I don't recall seeing anyone who works for Microsoft in here,
ever.

Most likely. I don't think cleaning the registry will help you, so I
would advise against it.
Go into a command line and type SET
Are there any environment variables that point to H:\myname ? Office
would use those irrespective of what they were during the setup.

I don't think there are any.

Hi Adr,

The Technet and MSDN 'managed' newsgroups are included in the news://msnews.microsoft.public ones. When posting through Technet or
MSDN if you're using the Windows Live profile ID tied to your subscription then it does flag the MS technet/MSDN support folks who
will offer answers as well as the peer support here (primary use) that Patrick mentioned.

You can also use the Technet forums. Those are separate from the news/discussion 'regular' groups.

They show up on occasion when answering a question that was posted
using the method Bob described. They only answer that specific
question, though, they don't hang out answering others. And while they
may guarantee a response there isn't a guarantee the response is
actually correct. <g>

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

I'm having the same exact problem. I uninstalled office and reinstalled but have the same problem. My temp directories are pointing to valid folders.

Would love a solution for this one!

Thanks.

Hi,

Do you all have IE7 installed?

I got this error a few days after installing IE7. As soon as I removed
IE7, this error in Outlook/Word went away.

Try set your system enviorment in registry.

check "Cahce" and make sure it points to a valid read/writeable
location,Temp folder or Internet temp folder (and if you don't want
your mail to be readable by security issue, place them on a crypted
location, cause this is so stupid by outlook)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

This worked for me (Outlook 2007).

I registered just for this answer ;).. don't expect replies.

Yeah, same problem. But, I need much more detail in fixing the
registry!

Post above was Greek Cyrilic to me.

I had the same problem. Thanks to Robbie who posted on this forum o
top, I managed to fix it. In my case this was due to synchronizatio
which happened between my laptop and another backup device. Backu
device has f***up software and it has overwritten my variables. B
changing the temp variables in registry it works as a baby agian.

I realize that to most of you, working with registeries is common place
but for those of use who have never tweaked with a Registry before
could you perhaps provide some instruction on how to perform what yo
just mentioned
