2008 creates strange folder each time I simply save new workbook todesktop?

Every time I save an Excel 2008 workbook to the desktop, the application
also creates a separate folder on the desktop with these three subfolders
and a file listed in its contents:

_rels
[Content_Types].xml
docProps
Xl

That did not happen in Excel 2004 or even earlier versions when I saved a
new workbook to the desktop.

I'm confused and would appreciate counsel on what to do.

You are probably saving as HTML. Look in preferences and change the default
file type.

Get Info says that the weird folders that Excel puts on the desktop whenever
I save a new document are each 68 kb and contain 16 items. The folders have
the identical names of the workbooks that I save with "Folder" appended, as
in "Workbook1.xlsxFolder"

This happens no matter whether I save a new document with Save or Save As.

If I trash the folders, I can still open the documents.

Again, this never happened with Office 2004, only 2008.

Anything else I can do to help diagnose this bug?

I'm not sure it's a bug. When you do a save as, what format is selected? As
I said in a prior post, I think you have it set for web page.

Bob, thanks, but I can't find where an HTML preference might be set for
Excel I examined each of the Excel/Preferences lists of options, examined
my Workbook template, and checked /Excel/Help/HTML but I remain clueless.

The only place in Excel/Preferences where I see Font options is in General.
I use Verdana 10 point. But I can't find a box for selecting or
de-selecting HTML. There is a button for Web Options: I didn't change
anything ever, but when I looked, I could find no place to de-select HTML.

Where will I find the preference, please?

In the Save As dialog. If the sheet was saved as HTM, it will stay that way
creating the extra folders. Also look in the compatibility tab of
preferences.

I can't explain *why* it's happening but I believe I can explain *what's*
happening:

The 2008 .---x format is actually a zipped package of files, not just a
single file as was created by earlier versions. For some reason your .xlsx
file is being expanded which results in the Excel icon along with the
unzipped folder of supporting files. I would expect that if you attempt to
open the Excel file from within Excel that you won't be able to - you'll
probably get a message indicating that the file is open by [user] & asking
if you want to be notified when it's available. However, double-clicking it
on the desktop will open it as usual.

Until you can determine what is causing the expansion to be imposed I'd
recommend not saving to the desktop - save to a folder instead. Hopefully it
is only if you save directly to the desktop that this happens? Does it
happen with any other 2008 files?

I've not seen this occur in 10.4.x so whether it's something about 10.5 or
settings in StuffIt or something specific to your config I can't say. If I
can determine more I'll post a reply here.

Thanks very much for looking into this, Bob, and suggesting a temporary
workaround.

If I save to a folder, this behavior does not occur, only if I save to the
Desktop.

I've set my preference to save new workbooks to the Desktop for years and
then moved them at a convenient time to data folders. I did this so I
wouldn't have to navigate to nested subfolders each time I did a "save" or
"save as."

I've created a new folder for new Excel 2008 saves on my data
volume--hopefully until this can be debugged.

Excellent diagnosis, Bob! The problem is fixed--permanently!--by
UN-checking the Stuffit Expander 12.0.1 preference to automatically expand
archives on the Desktop, which I think is a default Expander preference.

Thanks so very much for all your thoughtful and generous contributions to
the newsgroup.

Hello again -

Another MVP came up with what I believe to be the answer. I just tested it
and it could very well be right on the money:

In StuffIt Expander there is a Preference to Automatically expand files
saved to a specified location. In your case I'll wager that you have the
option checked & that the location specified is Desktop. Either don't save
Office 2008 files directly to the desktop [FWIW, I've been told it isn't a
good practice in the first place] or change/disable that setting.
