[2010] mail stuck in outbox (new type of problem)

A

Ammammata

I know, there are thousands of results in google for "mail stuck in
outbox", but I can't find my problem, it's different

steps to reproduce the issue:

start outlook and go to Outbox (without preview pane):

new mail, recipient, subject, hello, click Send
in outbox the new mail is shown in BOLD ITALIC
click on send&receive, it goes, ok

new mail, recipient, subject, hello, click Send
in outbox the new mail is shown in BOLD ITALIC
click ONCE on the message line, it remains BOLD but no more italic
click on send&receive, it DOES NOT go, and won't, forever

new mail, recipient, subject, hello, click Send
in outbox the new mail is shown in BOLD ITALIC
DOUBLE click on the message line, a new window opens, close it, the line
became normal text, no bold and no italic
click on send&receive, it DOES NOT go, and won't, forever

(temporarysolution - awful workaround - of the problem)
to send the mail I click on it in Outbox, then Forward
note that the new mail has the recipient field already with the address
of the blocked one, click Send, I can see it in Outbox in BOLD and
ITALIC, I click immediately on send&receive and it goes; the original
(blocked) remains in outbox until I manually delete it

I tried to close and restart outlook and to start in SAFE mode too
the antivirus is Microsoft Security Essentials, Outlook is updated
(I'll check it again next friday, now I don't have the notebook)

tips and tricks?

Items appear in the Outbox folder ONLY during *sending* of the e-mail.
When you compose a new e-mail, it does NOT have a copy put in the Outbox
folder. After all, you aren't sending it yet. You are merely still
composing a new e-mail. At most, when a copy of the new e-mail is saved
(while you are editing it or if you choose not to send it yet), it is
created in the Drafts folder. When you Send is when a copy
*momentarily* appears in the Outbox folder.

Your description makes it sound like you are composing a new e-mail and
you click Send. That means the e-mail should show up in the Outbox
folder ONLY during the mail session between Outlook and the server.
Outlook moves the e-mail into the Outbox folder during a mail poll to
ready it for transfer. It should not be in there otherwise.

That you are *editing* an item in the Outbox folder means you moved it
there or it did NOT get sent successfully. You should NEVER edit an
item that is in the Outbox!

"new mail, recipient, subject, hello, click Send
in outbox the new mail is shown in BOLD ITALIC
click on send&receive, it goes, ok"

You clicked Send. That means Outlook has changed the status of the item
to put it in the Outbox to ready it for transfer in a mail poll. If it
is sitting in the Outbox then maybe you configured Outlook not to
automatically send e-mails but instead sit there until whenever YOU
choose to initiate a mail poll. That does NOT mean that is an editable
item. You sent it. Don't edit it again.

"new mail, recipient, subject, hello, click Send
in outbox the new mail is shown in BOLD ITALIC
click ONCE on the message line, it remains BOLD but no more italic
click on send&receive, it DOES NOT go, and won't, forever"

Yep, you modified a *sent* (but still pending) item. Don't do that. It
changes the status of the item so it will not be included in the next
mail poll (which apparently you are doing manually instead of
immediately or at scheduled intervals). If you don't want it sent and
have not yet started the mail poll then move it out of the Outbox folder
back into the Drafts folder. Drafts is where you store e-mails you have
NOT yet tried to send and which are still editable. You edit *drafts*,
not sent items (even if they are still sitting in the Outbox).

"new mail, recipient, subject, hello, click Send
in outbox the new mail is shown in BOLD ITALIC
DOUBLE click on the message line, a new window opens, close it, the line
became normal text, no bold and no italic
click on send&receive, it DOES NOT go, and won't, forever "

Stop editing items in the Outbox. That is NOT where you edit e-mails.
You change the status of that item when you edit it. Items GO INTO the
Outbox folder when they are to get sent. Move the item into the Drafts
folder, edit there, and then click Send (which then moves the item into
the Outbox folder).

Items in the Outbox folder are pending transfer. That is not the same
as the Drafts folder. To prevent you from erroring again on editing
pending Send items, configure Outlook to immediate establish a mail poll
session when you click the Send button; else, if you want to manually
decide when to do a mail poll, STOP editing items that are still
lingering in the Outbox folder which are pending a transfer.

this is true if you have setup Outlook to send IMMEDIATELY your mails
but this is NOT the current setting; it happens that just after I click
Send (that's "Put in Outbox") I change my mind on something and I go
back to the mail to amend something

not true, see above; the mail stays in outbox until I decide to perform
a Send and receive

so all of the above is not valid in my case

thankyou for the reply, I hope I made myself more clear now

Nope, true. Items appear in the Outbox that are awaiting (pending) to
get sent. Whether you configure Outlook to do manual mail polling or
you have it send immediately but your e-mail server is really slow,
Outlook puts the sent items in the Send folder for the next mail poll
whether that mail poll is immediate or performed manually later.
Changing the status of those items will make Outlook believe that those
items are not to be sent (they're not in a state it expects).
not true, see above; the mail stays in outbox until I decide to perform
a Send and receive

Nope, true. My statement was an OR condition so "or it did NOT get sent
successfully" is still true UNTIL whenever you choose to do the manual
mail poll. It is in the Outbox awaiting (pending) to be *sent*.
so all of the above is not valid in my case

Stop EDITING or touching items in the Outbox. The reason that Outlook's
status on those items changes, as you have noted, is because you are
editing items in the Outbox.

Stop clicking on the SEND button if you're not ready to send the item.
The item will then get put into the Drafts folder and *that* is where
you edit them.

If an item is sitting in the Outbox folder pending to get sent but you
decide you want to edit it before you do your manual mail poll, move it
to the Drafts folder. After you are done editing, click on the Send
button to move it into the Outbox folder. You click Send to *send*, not
to put on hold to edit sometime later which is what the Drafts folder is
for.

ok, so I'll give it a try: next time I change my mind on a mail already
in Outbox, I'd better move it into Drafts first

apart this, note that just one click is enough to stop it: I made a test
on a different pc and it doesn't happen so I'm thinking more to something
wrong in that installation

Could be a different in configuration of Outlook on the other host, like
maybe you're not automatically adding signatures on that other host.
Could be you're using different anti-virus programs. I don't even want
to think about how many boobs, er, users think that having their AV
program append a "This is not infected because, um, I say so" block of
text onto their outbound e-mails and newsgroup posts. Even if you
configure your AV program not to add that inane announcement, some still
will change the headers to reflect use of that AV program and that
represents a change in the e-mail item (no matter in which folder it
resides). Without that change, and without you changing anything in the
body, just clicking but then Send probably has Outlook see there was no
change to the item wherease an AV changing the header(s) means a *new*
item got put by YOU into the Outbox folder (Outlook only likes when *it*
puts an item in the Send folder).
