25,000 resources created - out of memory

With about 30 Project Managers over about 3 months, we have seen this happen
2 times (with different people), so we'd like to know what is up.

The report is that MS Project locks up and shuts down while trying to save
the project to Project Server.

After restaring Project Pro, the user notices that one of the Local
resources has been duplicated about 25,000 times. How does this happen? We
can't identify anything unusual that the user could have done to cause this.

When the user tries to delete the duplicate resources and save the Project,
they get an error message which says:

An unexpected error occured during command execution.
Try the following:
*Verify that all argument names and values are correct and are of the
correct type.
*You may have run out of memory. To free up some available memory, close
programs, projects, or windows that you aren't using.

We just had a new problem that is no exactly the same but similar. Somehow
one of the local resources is being duplicated anywhere from 20 to over 500
times. This resource has the same name as an enterprise resource and does
not belong in the project. We delete the resource- but somehow the
duplicates and the local resource keep coming back. A prompt comes up
everytime to rename the resource, but even after renaming only one is
changed- there are still all the duplicated with the same name as the
resource.

Any info would be helpfull on this. Is this a bug?

These both sound like project plan corruption. You might try saving the pans
in XML format using File > Save as saving the projects to a local hard
drive. Then delete original plan from the server and use the import feature
to bring the saved plan back to the server. At that point, republish and see
if that helps.

I know it's an old thread, but in all attempts to revisit the issue, we have
this recurring issue with several of our Project Managers.

Sounds like your answer is more of a workaround than a resolution. By this
time, is there already a patch for this?

Jack:

This isn't a known issue that requires a patch. It's more likely something
in your environment like the way the workstations are setup, a flakey
network segment, or something like that. The answer lies within your
environment.

Gary,

Could be an environment issue, but might be more of a glitch. Here is some
data from our situation.

We have also had this problem on 4 projects out of 185 over a period of 18
months. The latest and also the worst was Friday last week where the
duplicates exceeded 80,000. I opened a ticket with MS on the issue since it
caused an "error: 9446" when saving (the support ticket is still open as I am
waiting for a response on the cause of the duplicates). The incident
previous was in November.

Although there is a possibility that environment could be related, the fact
that this occurred sometime in the last month and was isolated to just one
project during that timeframe makes me wonder if it is the result of a glitch
caused by doing a certain sequence of events in a certain situation. We had
no other projects affected over the last month and have 42 project managers
managing 185 projects on the server and I would expect an environment issue
to create more than a single ripple. Another note is that the project had no
issues for a period of 8-10 months.

I will share with the group any response I get from MS.

All,

I received a response back from Microsoft referencing this as a known issue.
Review article 890073 dated November 19, 2004. In the introduction, it
references the issue of creating duplicate resources and states that the
number will double every additional time you save the project. According to
MS support, the fix is to install SP1 on the client along with all the
hotfixes (including the one referenced in the article). Here is the full
response from MS Support.

"Hello Jim,

That is great news! This is actually a client-side bug. Once you apply
service pack 1 + the latest hotfixes you should no longer see this problem.
This problem was addresed in article:

890073 PSRV2003: RFH: Local Resources automatically duplicated creating very
large numbers of local resources

My recommendations are to install service pack 1 + latest hotfixes for the
client as well as the server. It would benefit you greatly.

I will proceed with closing your issue. Thanks for using Microsoft Products
and Support Services."

Hope this helps everyone.

Jim
