3 Copies of Same Project in PWA

Has anyone experienced this? 3 of the same (exact project name) appeared in
PWA. Each time an update was made and the project was saved and
re-published, it would create another copy with the same, exact name. I
thought that this was impossible! When I deleted the copies, it deleted the
original project also and it was lost forever! It was linked to each other
somehow.

I then created a test project plan with dummy tasks which showed up in PWA
with no problem. I created a second plan and guess what!? The tasks of the
first showed up in the second plan but only in PWA. Bizarre!!!

This happened a couple of days ago. So far, so good. New projects have
been published since. I am really worried though that this might happen
again and I will loose more projects.

Thanks.

We generally see this behavior when the PM saves and publishes an enterprise
project, then later saves the project as an .mpp file and accidentally
publishes the .mpp version of the file. Did the PM for the offending
project ever save it as an .mpp file for any reason?

Do you mean saving the project offline (on your local drive) as an .mpp file?
If yes, this is possible since the project is PM's first in Project Server.

What's odd is I also had problems when I created those 2 test projects.

Saving an enterprise project as an .mpp file is called saving a "local" copy
of the project. To save a project as an "offline" project, the PM must
click File - Save Offline. We do not recommend that your PM's ever save an
enterprise project as an .mpp file since it can cause the problems you have
seen with the first project.

On the other hand, I am not certain what is the cause of your problems with
the two test projects. Perhaps the others can comment. Hope this helps.

Hi,
I have the same problem with my first project in Project Server. My
experience is that it was just the publishing that was done twice. In Project
Serves there was only one project. So only thing to do was to 'Hide' the
activities on the second project in PWA (but this is not easy, because it
isn't easy to now what project who is the second, and if a resource have
stored hours on both 'projects', he have to live with both)

Why does this happen? I don't know, but maybe the reason is that an other
person has published the same project (think I read about this situation one
of the Project web sites). Or anyone has published the local .mpp file (as
Dale Howard describe).

I save local copies of my projects (for distribution). But when I do this, I
always do it this way: Save the project to the server to be shore all changes
are saved in the server. Than I save the project to file, and close the
project immediately (because it is the file version).

I have also swished of the automatic 'publish on save' function. This is to
prevent unmeant publishing to PWA. Maybe this automatic make a publishing of
the file version of the project (when saving this), and this is published as
an 'other' project.

Don't know if this is helping you, but with these precautions I do not have
had this situation any more.
