i have a 4.5 X 6 layout I want to print 4 up on a letter size sheet. So far
all of the 2002 options have reduced or enlarged my item. This is SO MUCH
easier in publisher... surely there is a way

If you have Publisher, then by all means use it. No one is forcing you
to use Word. Let me point out, though, that the minimum sheet size for
4-up 4.5 x 6 would be 9 x 12 -- and that isn't going to fit on a
letter-size sheet. The best you're going to do is 91.6% of original
size.

The "right" way to do it in Word is to create the original on a full
letter-size page, using font sizes that are double what you want on
the final printout. In the Print dialog, set "pages per sheet" to 4
and fill the Pages box with the string

1,1,1,1

The printer driver will automatically scale everything to 50% and
distribute the four copies to the corners of the sheet.
