503 Valid RCPT command must precede DATA

Hi,

When I send a message and I am offline (i.e. disconnected from my service
provider), instead of messages staying in my outbox, they are sent and I get
the following message in my inbox:
503 Valid RCPT command must precede DATA

Please advise? I have check for authentication settings (i.e. ping
mailserver before sending) which is off.

The unusual thing is that this only happens if offline.
