8.5 x 15" Stock Certificate

P

Pam, OK

This is an odd size, and I'm having trouble getting this to work. I can set
up the page, but when I go to print preview, it only shows me and 8.5 x 11"
section, and will not print in landscape even after I've set the page to
landscape, along with the printer settings too.

I'm working in Word 2003, but I also was directed to Power Point but ended up
with the Word template that is 8.5 x 11". If I can accomplish the template
in Publisher I'll certainly try.

Is it

If so, it's legal size, not letter and that could be the problem.

When I try to print using legal size, it shrinks the image, and skews where
the fields should be in the 15" form.

No, I need the document to become a custom size as noted in the subject line.
Everytime I change the page size I would lose the ability to print-preview

has now created more formatting work, and I don't think this is way to fix it

I have a pre-printed stock certificate that is on 8.5 x 15" paper. I need my
template to match the paper size of my pre-printed certificate in order to be
able to put my fields, or text boxes in the proper positions. If I let it go
to legal everything shrinks, and does not print in the appropriate places.

Is it

If so, it's legal size, not letter and that could be the

I'm trying to create fields or text boxes in the places where the blank lines

If your printer can handle 15" stock, then setup your printer for a custom 8.5 x

I have done that with my printer. It is set to print to a custom size.
However, this template I'm trying to resize will not. I have also started a

the 15" length when I try printing.

Young--IN

Hello Pam:

I'm familiar with printing certificates. Your printer needs to handle a
page at least as large as the one you are asking about.

In other words, for an 8.5" x 15" certificate, you need a printer designed
for 11"x17" paper. A regular printer, designed for 8.5 x 14, actually
prints 8" x 13" or something like that!

(My printer Epson 1270 actually handles 13" x 28".)

That's why you see your computer is demanding to "fix" margins it thinks are
"incorrect." Page dimensions that are too large for the printer's page size
are automatically adjusted by the computer. It does this by "resizing" the
page dimensions and type sizes and positions.

If your first printed character on the left (measured from the edge of the
paper to where the first character begins) is 1" from the paper edge, then
you "lose" part of that 1". Because your computer thinks of that as
printable area and left margin (non-printable).

You might be able to get away with changing your Page Length to maybe 14".
(Remember the total printable line length will still be about 13".) That
way your Left margin could be corrected. However, if you are trying to
center a line in the 15", it will come off looking a little odd. Optically
a centered line would be off about 1/2" to 3/4".

What I typically do is print out a sample page on 8.5" x 14" paper, tape a
certificate to a window (light coming from behind) and overlay the pages.
Check my positions, and make small manual adjustments as needed. Then put
in the certificate and the type should fit the blanks and the certificate!

Let me know if you have questions?

Cordially yours,

Young--IN

P

Pam, OK

Thanks for the suggestion on changing the paper length on the word .dot to
14". I was doing all of the other things you were saying too. I actually
taped the cert to my screen while viewing in 100%. Now that the paper is 14"
I can see all of it in print preview. I think I now have a workable template.
Thanks again.
Pam
