Hi Irv

Assuming you have Word 97 installed on your computer (I know, dumb
question, but some people don't understand this basic requirement),
the quickest way is to

- open the Start > Run box
- type the following line:
winword.exe /r
- click the OK button.

You won't see anything happen on screen, but Word will rewrite its
registry entries. One of these is the entry that tells Windows to use
Word to open any file with a .doc or .dot extension.

The long way, which will also work with other extensions, is this:
- open Windows Explorer (the file management thingy)
- right-click a .doc file, or any other kind of file you want Word to
open (such as .txt)
- select "Open With" and then "Choose Program"
- find Word in the list and click on it
- check the box for "Always use the selected program to open this kind
of file"
- click the OK button.
