_vti files

What are the _vti files???
At first when I created my site there were none, but since doing the changes
and trying to put a guestbook on and hitcounter they have seemed to
appear.....
Most of them just have duplicates of my webpages in???

Many thanks

They are files that manage FrontPage. They don't have duplicates of your
web pages, just meta data. Leave them alone.

When I try to update changes from remote to loacal (my pc at work) I get an
error saying..
Server error: The URL '_vti_bin' is invalid. It may refer to a nonexistent
file or folder, or refer to a valid file or folder that is not in the current
Web.

So when I click ok it then stops and no updates have been done......

Any ideas???

Many thanks

Open the local site.
Recalculate hyperlinks
Close the local and open the remote
Recalculate hyperlinks.

Then try saving remote to local.

It lets me recalculate hyperlinks for my local but Frontpage wont let me
"just" open my remote website (alone) it opens it okay with my loacl???
What am I doing wrong as its winding me up now....

Many thanks

Does the remote server have FrontPage extensions installed? How do you
normally publish - FTP or HTTP?
To open the remote site in FrontPage it must have extensions installed.
Extensions are also required for the guestbook and hitcounter to work.
Using FTP will corrupt the extensions if they are installed.

Your site does have FrontPage extensions.
If you have used FTP to publish then it is possible the extensions have
been corrupted and will need to be repaired or re-installed.
You must publish the web using
File->Publish Site (or Publish Web in FP2002 and earlier)
And the URL used to publish to must be in the form
http://www.fetish-supplies.co.uk - not ftp://......

To open the site, use
File->Open Site (or Open Web)
Type in http:// www.fetish-supplies.co.uk
and log in with your username and password. Then you can recalculate
hyperlinks as described earlier.
Again, if you have used FTP, you may have to reinstall the extensions
before this will work.

With the extensions, and http publishing, you will be able to use the
hit counter and guestbook. Hit counters are not really useful since
refreshing the page in the browser counts as another hit.
The Guestbook can, unfortunately, also be a spam magnet - it may attract
many links to on line pharmacies and worse.

Thanks for the information....
I agree with you on the pointers so I may remove the guestbook and
hitcounter as its just added a whole lot of headaches......

Time to have another play with frontpage...

Thanks for your execellent help.....
