While examining my web logs I see this file being accessed a lot. I cannot
find it any where in my root directory. I have asked to see all hidden files
and folders in my root directory. I have looked at my site on the server, but
I can't find it anywhere. Anybody have a clue what _vti_bin/fpcount.exe/ is?

That's the hit counter thing FP users can put in a page to "count" how many
times a page was viewed.

Usually it's some image with some version of "This page has been viewed ##
## times since April 2, 2003!"

You can't find the file because it's installed in the default web instance
in a virtual folder as part of the FP extensions. Getting hits on this file
is a normal part of FrontPage web sites.

Unless you are getting lots of hits that are not also accompanied by image
and HTM hits from the same IP, I'd say it's normal.

If it's just that one file getting hits, I'd say someone is probing the
file. (So make sure the FPSE are the latest version and patched up to
date.)

It's what runs the hit counter on a web with FrontPage extensions.
Do you have a page with a hit counter on it??

You won't actually find a copy of fpcount.exe in your web folders. It's
located in a virtual directory used by the extensions.

If you want to know where it "really" lives on your computer, look in:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server
extensions\50\isapi
for 2002 version extensions, and:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server
extensions\40\isapi
for 2000 version extensions.

Yes, I have two hit counters. Glad it was not some kind of security issue. I
freaked a little bit when I saw it keeping pace with my index.html page.
Thanks for your time all.
