A black line across the screen (corruption)

N

Nigel W (UK)

I'm using MS Word 2002. In some documents I keep getting a thick black line
right across the screen. This appears to be a bug. The line normally
appears between the bottom of the text area and the footer in the "Print
Layout View". The line still displays in Print Preview View. It does not
display in "Normal View". Is this a bug? Is there a fix?

I also notice that when working with Tables, screen formatting is very poor.
Shading does not always show up. Lines often disappear. This is a screen
painting problem in "Print Layout View" as when I look at the document in
"Print Preview" it is fine. Any suggestions? I'm using Windows XP Pro on a
high spec laptop.

Christopher

I am having the same problem does anyone have a solution. The article
referenced is no help. I also noticed it does not appear at 60 or 65% zoom or
less.

C

Christopher

It is not borders or formating. The black does not appear on one line but in
blocks across the entire document and up and down the sides in irregular
sizes blocking the footer, portions of paragraphs, and prtions of the side of
the page. It is only like this in Print Layout View at any zoom above 65%.
Any Ideas anyone???

C

Christopher

Also the problem is computer specific not document specific. the documents
in question open fine on every other computer in the office except one and it
happens on many docs not just one or two.

C

Christopher

Yes, and it was not of any help, but I have some more info which may help.
The problem is user specific on that particular screen. If I log on as anyone
else the docs appear fine. Also I found that if I unchek "Drawings" under
the "print & web layout options" the blck goes away but then the sidebar and
header of the template are no longer visible, however the footer is. Any
Ideas???? I'm hoping it's just a simple option somewhere that I'm missing
but I don't know.

This sounds like a display issue; do different users have different
resolutions selected? Different hardware acceleration settings?

C

Christopher

Not a display issue. All users have same display settings. I have also tried
changing display settings with no success or difference.

Do you have a Web site where you can post a screen shot (attachments not
permitted here)?

From the title bar I see that this document seems to have originated with
OCR? That might be significant. What it really looks like is just a portion
of the document having been selected. Could it possibly be that there are
some AutoShapes or frames of some kind behind the text that are getting
selected?

Do these black bars move around as you move through the document or stay in
the same place? Are you using the Pleading Wizard in Word (or a customized
version of it)? Since you say the problem occurs only on a specific
computer, I guess it wouldn't help for me to take a look at the document
(which is probably confidential, anyway). And yet it would appear that the
black bars are not just a video artifact because in one of them you can see
the green wavy underline that indicates a grammatical error. I'm really
grasping at straws here, as you can tell.

One thing you might try is connecting a different monitor to the same system
(or connecting the monitor being used to a different system) to isolate the
problem and eliminate the monitor itself (though if it's a video problem, it
would probably be with the video card, which is in the computer itself
<sigh>).

It looks to me like the questionable spelling indicator. I'm wondering if
there might be some repeated non-displaying character that's being treated
as if it were a word, and Word is simply saying that it's misspelled.

Try selecting the area where the lines appear, then choose Tools -
Language - Set Language, and click Do not check spelling or grammar.

Does that make it go away? If so, then the problem is that the ostensibly
blank characters are something other than a normal space, and are being
treated as if they formed a misspelled word.

Whether it's spelling or grammar (and I agree with your assessment given
that Word reverses the color in selections), the issue is the black patches,
and I don't see how they would be caused by spelling *or* grammar errors.

In any case, I doubt that we'll hear back from Christopher before Monday at
the earliest!

If I have read this thread correctly, this is just one user's profile on
this one machine. The documents work correctly on other machines or if other
users log in to this machine. The fault is not logical, so before doing
anything else, I'd delete the user's profile and create a new profile for
the user.

Terry is correct. The problem is not in the document, the monitor, or
graphics settings. The problems are specific to a single user on a single
machine while the document displays correctly for any other user on that same
machine. My next step is to recreate the user profile but I rather not if I
don't have to. I've been waiting hoping someone would have A simpler
solution.

Herb Tyson [MVP]

As a simple test, you can create a new user profile (don't bother
customizing it yet) on that computer, log in, open the file, and see if the
problem still exists. That will tell you if it's a simple user settings
issue, or something else.

A quick test: log in as this user and you start Word from the Run command by
typing in

winword /a

and pressing enter, does Word still exhibit the same problem?
