A drive problem in WordXP

Andrea

Hello,

I'm using OfficeXP with Windows 98SE. I'm suddenly unable to read any files
from any diskettes in my A drive. I either get a message that the document
name or path is invalid, or that Word failed reading from this file and to
restore the network connection or replace the floppy and retry. I get the
same message whether I try to open the file from the Word Open window or
from Windows Explorer. I downloaded SP3, which didn't help. I blew air into
the A drive in case there was a dust problem. I tried to copy files to the C
drive, but they couldn't be read. I do see the file names and sizes in
Windows Explorer or the Word Open window. I don't think it's the A drive
itself because I can read text files from the same diskettes with Notepad.
Any suggestions?

Do you have an anti-virus program? Is it running? Could you turn it
off and try Word again?

I've been unhappy with how long virus scanning takes on Word ever since
updating to NAV 2004 in January, but the problem with the A drive is new. I
just disabled NAV and here's what happened:

1. I opened Word and even though there was only a greyed screen, Word was
requesting a virus scan. This took a long time--although NAV was disabled.
2. I got to the Open window and a slow scanning began again. I'm not sure
what's scanning because NAV is off, but I couldn't do anything until it was
finished.
3. I then went to the A drive in the Look In window, and another scan began
and hung there.
4. I finally clicked on one of the files even though it was still scanning,
an empty white screen came up, and the scanning continued. Finally, I got
the error message about restoring the network connection or replacing the
floppy. I clicked on that and then the other error message came up about the
path being invalid.

Why is Word scanning? What's happening if NAV is disabled? And does this
have something to do with not reading the A drive? It seems likely, although
I can open documents from my C drive even with all the scanning.

I found the solution. I read on another board about how people solved the
problem of the endless scanning in Word with NAV2004. I thought I'd
completely disabled it and yet Word was still scanning, but apparently
there's an Option (Miscellaneous) for the Office Plug-in. When I unchecked
that, the incessant scanning of Word stopped--and I was able to open
documents in my A drive. I can also now copy them to my C drive. I had
thought that the problem was related to Word and not to the A drive, and the
slow scanning seemed to be interfering. Some of the files on my floppies got
corrupted during this trial and error process, but nothing essential. Thanks
for trying to help.

Word, especially older versions, has problems opening files directly on a
floppy.
Copy the file to a disk drive and open from there.

Disable the Office plug-in in NAV 2004, but keep NAV's AutoProtect enabled.

As I originally posted, I couldn't copy the files to the C drive. I'm using
WordXP, so it's not an old version. I posted yesterday that I did figure out
that the problem was solved by disabling the Office plug-in, so your other
post was exactly right! I can now read from the A drive as well as copy the
files to the C drive.
