a Font Limit to Entourage?

J

Jim Corveddu

I have an original Bondi Blue iMac, 233MHz, running OS 9.2.2
I recently added about 200 fonts to my system. I have only 340 "items" in my
Fonts folder, with an average of 15 fonts in each suitcase I made, none of
them with more than 19 inside. I made about 40 suitcases for my new fonts.
There are a total of 951 fonts, almost all of them are TrueType.
ALL the fonts check out OKAY with FontDoctor: there are NO corruptions.

Entourage starts up okay & works okay. I can even select any of the fonts in
the preferences or HTML formatting menu. When I quit Entourage, however, I
get a system error, most likely Error Type 10 (the error window is blank),
and my computer freezes.

I checked Microsoft support, but all I get is a warning about corrupt fonts.
I even trashed the MS Office font cache and rebuilt the desktop. Nothing
seems to work.

If I get rid of any half of my new font suitcases, Entourage works & quits
just fine. So, I am thinking there is simply a limit to how many fonts
Entourage can handle. If that were true, I would think the program wouldn't
work at all. But it works. It just can't quit without crashing the computer.

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance from a font-addict,

I haven't come across a problem like this at all before. Does the same thing
happen in other office apps?

Unfortunately, if it is an entourage limitation, I doubt that it will ever
get fixed - with entourage 2004 now out, 2001 is 3 versions old and will
only get attention for the worst of security problems.

Barry,

Thanks for the reply. I solved my problem by reinstalling my old copy of
Extensis Suitcase 10 and limiting my System Folder to only 58 fonts.

By the way, there previously weren't any problems with any of my other
Office apps. Word, Excel and PowerPoint all had no problem seeing & using
all 951 fonts, and they gave no trouble upon starting or quitting. It was
only Entourage that had the problem.

Also, isn't Office 2001 the last available version for OS 9.2.2?

Yes, it is - but the fact it is now about 4 years old, and the customer base
for OS 9 is declining, it does mean that economic considerations mean that
it is likely that only the most serious of issues would be enough to cause
any updates to be written, tested, packaged, delivered and supported.

Actually Microsoft made an official announcement during 2001 that they would
not be developing any more software for the classic Mac OS, and would be
releasing only security updates for existing software. This was part of the
effort to help Apple get everyone over to OS X: MS Office was the first
major 3rd-party app to come over to X, and discontinuing development for OS
9 was part of the strategy. They have in fact since released some security
updates for Entourage 2001, Internet Explorer 5.1 (IE's team has since
disbanded), and maybe Outlook Express 5.0.6 update came after that date - I
forget (but don't think so). They even released the Microsoft Office 2001
Combined Update 9.0.4 for Entourage after that date, putting about a dozen
updates together into one. I think that was their last word on the subject.
