there is a message that pops up when you close word 2002
that states that there has been changes to the
template "Normal" even though nothing has been done in
the program. is there anything i can do about this
message?

Cosmic,

Something has been done or I don't think your would be seeing the message.
Check Tools>Templates and Addins to see if you have any Addins that are
installe that could be causing this behaviour.

nothing has been added. its first prompts that there has
been a change to the template normal and if i want to
save. Even though i just open the program and close it
after loading.

As Greg says, this is usually an indication that an add-in loaded at startup
is adding a toolbar button or menu item to Word. The most notorious culprit
is the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word. If you got Word as part of
Works Suite and are running it freestanding (not starting it from the Works
Task Launcher), then you need to uninstall that add-in through Control Panel
| Add/Remove Programs. This will have the added benefit of avoiding many
other problems caused by that add-in.

If Works is not part of the picture, you can check for other add-ins, both
templates and COM add-ins, using the instructions at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm

Greg doesn't mean something has been added. He is saying that this is
usually caused by an ADD-IN which may be a macro, template or COM add-in
that some third party software has added. Usual suspects are anything from
Adobe, Symantec/Norton or even Works Suite Add-in.
