A needed workaround for RewriteEngine in .htaccess with FP

I have set up a custom error file handler on my domain, but when I try to
put ReWrite comands in my .htaccess file, it cripples Front Page.

Is there a known workaround? I can find nothing solid in the MS.COM
knowledge base...
